Need Help Finding Homes For Rescued Animals - Los Amigos de Los Animales needs one or more volunteers to take pictures and write bios for the animals at El Refugio, Kitty Heaven, and in foster care. Regular updates are needed for the Gringo Gazette, the BWO, and the Baja Rescue website. If you're good with a camera, like animals, and can be relied on to provide continuous, timely updates for these resources, you'll probably find the work a lot of fun. The most rewarding part of the rescue work is finding homes for the abandoned animals, and you would be a key link in doing this. Please contact me if you are interested - Janet Howey, janethowey[-at-]yahoo.com
Road Report #! Post Norbert (courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - If you send a report, please start with the date and time.
a. We have been halted by the Federal Policia as the road between Mulege and Loreto is 'broken'. So we secured the last room at the Motel Mulege which is the only one on a hill. We discovered that the motel was full of people who live near the lagoons in Mulege and they do this as a matter of routine to get to high ground. There are entire neighborhoods here ready to continue partying tonight! More from La Paz if we get there tomorrow.
No wireless or high speed here. Remember those times? - Pam
aa. Sent to me on 10/12 at noon: Pam telleen just called in sunday morning - the road was closed at loreto but is now open and they are continuing down - Tessa
b. This email was dated 10/12 [-at-]11pm. According to a government report the agglomerations a bit north of what is known as "el cien" north of La Paz got hit very hard by the hurricane, more than 200 houses are damaged. the highway is cut off at some places between La Paz and Constitution and between El Surgente and Loreto.
According to the CFE weather report on the net, the storm was Cat. 2.5 when it hit shore and maintain that force over the peninsula until it exited as a Cat. 2. The SCT said that they will have the highway passable by tomorrow. - LIC. JACQUES-EDOUARD BEAULNE
Road Report #2 Post Norbert ( Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - (Thanks everyone for the "onsite" road reports. Nice to know the road is open. Cheryl)
a. Jim and I left LA on Sunday morning and are currently in Loreto. The road just north of Loreto is fine. There were crews cleaning much of the mud that was on the road. A hotel employee in Loreto said they had a lot of rain but not much wind. We will be on the road tomorrow to Los Barriles. We will give another update when we are back. Mary Ann Egging
aa. Jim and I left Loreto at 5:40AM today and made it to Los Barriles around 11:30AM. The road was passable all the way down. There was some water on the roadway in a couple of spots but no problems. It's good to be back.
b. Oct., 13, 08 / 12:49 pm
According to the government the road from La Paz to Constitution has 11 damaged areas, from El Esurgente to Loreto the road was severely damaged, one person is reported as missing in Loreto. If anyone want to know if you can travel call the bus company AGUILA in La Paz.
c. Oct 14, 2008 10am: There were some bridges out around Loreto but traffic was still moving. The streets in Constitucion were covered in water in some places but the street construction the week before made it a mess then - just a little wetter now. It was slow in just a few places but no problems in getting through. LIC. JACQUES-EDOUARD BEAULNE
Driving South - Hola amigos. We just arrived in Sherman Oaks after a delightful trip up the Baja peninsula from East Cape. We were trying to be ahead of Norbert and thankfully make it! The only "problems" we encountered were some road repairs and a little wind. However, we suggest that if you're heading south, you should postpone your trip for a couple of days (maybe a week?) since the hardest hit areas have been Constitution and Loreto, both of which have been cleaning up since a storm hit weeks ago.
