News and Events

Missing At Sea - A 32 foot, single mast, cutter rig, white hull and white sails sailboat is overdue from Ensenada to CSL. Aboard is Jeff Peak, 58. It has been impossible to get a search going from Mexico (you can imagine the reasons and excuses). However, I hope through the Onion, to alert members of private and corporate aviation who would be going north and south for various reasons to be alert to this situation and watch the coastline for signs of this boat. There are family and friends in the States who would greatly appreciate having some answers about what happened to Jeff Peak. - Jeep Jeep, jeepsurfs2000[-at-]yahoo.com, 612-100-7672, Todos Santos

Yoga. Saturday Yoga Continues In The Fall - Thank you all for your support of Saturday morning yoga. I enjoyed sharing energy with all of you. Seems there are no more people wanting to do yoga on Saturday mornings at this time of year so we will continue again in the fall. Gracias a todos. If you have any questions or comment, please send me an email. Gracias. Ellen - Ellen, ellen[-at-]ultimatefreedom.info, Todos Santos

Comments, Questions and Answers

Security System Info Needed - Would the Pescadero home owner who had a wireless security system installed a few weeks ago please email me with the name and number of the company that was located in LaPaz and Cabo? Unfortunately,I left the info at home, will only be in TS four more days and would like to contact the man you recommended. Thank you! - Vickie Butler, vandhbutler[-at-]charter.net, 775-848-5308

Digital TV Transition In The U.S. - After February 17, 2009, the US government is requiring that digital over-the-air broadcasts replace analog broadcasts. After that date, analog TVs will no longer be able to receive TV programming without being connected to a pay TV service or a digital-to-analog converter box.

We are frequently asked how this pending transition to Digital TV in the US will affect reception of satellite TV in Baja, and whether customers will need to buy a new TV, a converter or even a new satellite TV receiver. The transition to digital only affects consumers who have an analog TV and use "rabbit ears" or another type of regular outside TV antenna to get their broadcasts over-the-air. They will need to buy a newer TV or get a digital-to-analog converter.

Even if your current TV is analog, you will not be affected by the transition if you are connected to a satellite TV receiver because satellite-delivered TV signals are already 100% digital. The receiver converts the digital signals for use by your analog TV. For more information about the pending transition to digital broadcasts, go here: http://www.dtv.gov/consumercorner.html. - Alan Thompson, alan[-at-]bajasatellite.com, www.bajasatellite.com, 612 117 0484/530 313 5225, Todos Santos

Bringing Household Stuff to Mexico (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express)

A. Last year I went through the process of bringing household goods to Baja w/FM3 for a friend. We went to Sacramento Mexican Consulate and paid $127.00 and had (6) six copies of a list of "ALL" the items brought down with address in the U.S. on the upper left-hand corner and the Baja address in the upper right-hand corner. We dropped the copies of at the Mexican Consulate and had to wait two days before returning to pick them up and was told that we needed to stop at the border in San Isidro and pay as much as $350.00 more, I did the 'Gringo' drive by and was told by a Mexican friend that that could have been real bad if they were to chase me down and would have had to pay more than that. Also it's necessary to pay exact amount at the Mexican Consulate as they do not give change!. There is also a form to fill out so be prepared with your list ahead of time so you may save yourself an extra trip to the Consulate!

Note: Make sure you have all the items listed in case the 'Red' light comes on & they check the list against all the items brought, they will also be concerned if there are items short as well! Ref: I've been traveling the Baja every year for the past twenty five, I assure you, I know Baja and it's ways. Steve of Playita. They also make sure you are hauling your own items as there is an extra fee if you have someone else drive/haul for you. Wish you well. Bueno Suerte! Mexican Consulates in the states close at Noontime sharp!!!

----------------------------------------------

B. This is what I found on one of the Mexican consulate sights. My recommendation would be to find someone who has done a Menaje de Casa, borrow their list & do yours in the same format. Also you can get good help from the moving companies who bring your things from the northern border down into Mexico to your home here. Foreign retired residents, as well as immigrants are entitled to take their household effects into Mexico. A list of such effects must be certified by the Mexican Consulate for Customs in Mexico. The requirements to be met are as follows:
- FM3 or FM2 issued in his name.
- A typed list of household effects, in Spanish, accompanied by four additional photocopies, listing all items to be imported. Brand, model and serial numbers must be stated when listing electrical appliances.
-Pay the consular fee (please see table of consular fees).
Once the household effects list has been visaed, all furniture and appliances must enter the country within the next six months as of the date of the issue of the immigration form. Household effects can be brought into Mexico only once per family in a lifetime without a special permit from Mexican Customs

----------------------------------------------

C. In my article regarding importing household good I did not mention that one must have an FM-3 or FM-2 because it it was presumed that one who bought property in Mexico did follow the law that says that one MUST have an FM-3 or FM-2 once one you purchased real estate property.

Invalid Fidelcomisos Issued by Corredors Publicos (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - It has come to our attention at our Law Firm that many expatriates have "Fidelcomiso Traslativo de Dominio" contracts (FTD contract), wrongly call a bank trust, elaborated not by a "Notario Publico" (Contract Lawyer) but by a "Corredor Publico." I would like to remind everyone who did have an FTD contract done by said last mentioned legal professional that their FTD contract is not valid.

The reason is that a Corredor Publico can only do commercial acts such as writing contracts but cannot do civil acts thus, he could not legally transfer real estate property ownership which was done in the FTD contract, only a Notario Publico can do civil acts such as transfer of real estate property ownership.

If any one wants more information on how to correct the situation please contact us by e-mail at can-am-mex[-at-]hotmail.com or info[-at-]can-am-mex.com, or cell phone: (612) 348-9793, Lic. Jacques-Edourd Beauline, Abogado

Quote of the Day: " All of us have schnozzles . . . if not in our faces, then in our character, minds or habits. When we admit our schnozzles, instead of defending them, we begin to laugh, and the world laughs with us. " - Jimmy Durante, American Entertainer
