Stench, Water Contamination - The nasty sewage-water pond at the end of Camino del Pacifico overflowed into the ocean, Weds. morning. A bystander called both La Paz and local authorities to try to get a tractor to stop the initial trickle, but nobody moved to do it. This overflow has created a new canal to the ocean. Need Help For A Friend & Neighbor - This is to let everyone know of a serious traffic accident that occurred on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago between Pescadero and Todos Santo. It involved Juan Aviles and his family. The entire family suffered serious injury.
Here is what we have been told so far: evidently Juan was ejected from the vehicle and has a head injury, internal injuries, and has no feeling in his leg. His wife, Rosa has a head injury evidenced by a long gash across her forehead, the young boy has no feeling in his legs and their young girl has a minimum of a broken arm.
They were all taken to Salvatierra hospital in La Paz. Here is an update from Juan's friends who have visited the family there. I will do my best to describe Juan's circumstance. When we arrived at Salvatierra hospital and entered his room we immediately assessed the circumstance. It was a sweltering 105 outside at about 90 in his room. The night before Juan reports, that they wanted to amputate his leg. But, he wasn't in agreement so a Dr. Mondragon was dispatched by a friend as a second opinion. This doctor changed the treatment regimen which was cutting off the circulation and would have resulted in amputation.Juan has already undergone surgery.
We took Juan a monetary care package consisting of 9500 pesos from some of the residents of Rancho Nuevo, Eric and Lorena, Rod and Carmen, and Faye and Don. Carmen was able to collect another 10 mil pesos from other Rancho Nuevo residents. In Mexico, you have to buy all of your medical supplies and medicines and present them to the hospital to administer. For example, a Titanium Plate and Titanium were needed to complete the surgery on Juan's 11 year old daughter. So, we had to go buy these items before the surgery could be done. the price for these items alone was 9,000 pesos.
Juan's' 9 year old son (Pepe) looked to be in the worst shape of all. His head was so swollen that his eyes are swollen shut. I had never seen anything like it as his head was so swollen that it was bigger than a soccer ball. the poor kid also has two broken legs. the hospital is so antiquated that I have real concern for the boy. He is going to have surgery on both legs, but, not until they get the Brain Swelling down."
Their medical expenses are mounting and Juan won't be able to work for some time.

Building In Todos Santos - You may build adjacent to your property line, but you may not have any openings in the exterior walls that abut the property line. You do not in most cases need to have a set back if your permit is issued by the building department in La Paz. Unlike the building department in the U.S., the building department in La Paz does not oversee your construction. That becomes the responsibility of your engineer, architect and yourself. If your construction is less than 300 sq. meters, the building permit is good for one year but can be renewed if not completed or started.
