Tibetan Monks Visit Baja - A group of monks from the Gashar Tawon Khang Tsen Monastery will arrive in La Paz on May 21st where they will have activities until June 4. They will then arrive in Cabos on June 5 and will stay until June 21st. This group is visiting Mexico as part of the 10th World Peace Tour presented by the Religion and Culture Bureau of the Central Administration of H.H. the Dalai Lama. The Monastery was one of the oldest monasteries in Tibet and it was rebuilt in southern India after Tibet was occupied by China. The monks have been traveling around the world since 2005 to promote world peace, inner harmony and to raise funds to support the close to 10 thousand monks who live, study and practice at the monastery.

The detailed programs will be published shortly. At this time the organizers would like to schedule a couple of days in Todos Santos. Tentative dates are Tuesday June 10 and Tuesday June 17. On these dates the monks could hold a purification ceremony for 10 to 15 people and do private oracle consultations and house and business blessings. We would need a place to hold the purification ceremony and someone to host the monks and their group of translators and drivers for lunch. If there is interest please contact me to finalize the details. - Claudia Velo, claudia[-at-]indigoconsultores.com, monksinbaja.wordpress.com, (624) 104 3644, Cabo San Lucas

Update Regarding Friend And Neighbor Juan Aviles - This is Carmen Gutierrez, writing to update all concerned parties regarding Juan Aviles’ and his family’s medical condition. Juan and his family were in involved in a serious car accident on April 27th. Rancho Nuevo residents who have since visited Juan at the hospital are Eric and Lorena Johnson, Rod Bradley, Scotty McLemore, Leonardo Perel and me. Since that time Leonardo and I have spoken to Juan by phone on several different occasions. Here’s what we have learned. Juan sustained serious injury to his foot and leg. A second doctor was required to undo the poor medical work of the first doctor who had basically set Juan up to have his foot amputated. Juan’s wife, Rosa, was released from the hospital on April 26th. Juan’s daughter has had two surgeries, one on each arm, and according to what Juan told me on May 8th , she may be released from the hospital early next week. As of May 8th, Juan still does not know when he will be released from the hospital and how long it will be before he can walk on this foot.

The most serious injuries were sustained by Juan’s 11 year old son, Pepe. Pepe suffered serious head trauma and both legs were broken. Doctors have not been able to operate on Pepe’s legs until the swelling to his brain subsided. The good news is that the swelling has gone down and he is scheduled for surgery on May 9th. Juan stated the doctor plans to operate on both legs at that time. Given what had initially occurred with the treatment of Juan’s leg and foot injuries, I was concerned about the quality of the treatment Juan and his children were receiving at the Salvatierra hospital. Consequently, I telephoned Dr. Buenaventura, a well regarded internist in La Paz, and explained the situation to him especially regarding Pepe. In response, Dr. Buenaventura called a specialist to see Pepe. According to Juan, this specialist saw Pepe, Juan and his daughter and told Juan he was satisfied with the quality of care they were all receiving.

To date, Rancho Nuevo residents have raised over $3,500 US to contribute to Juan and his family’s medical care. As the previous posting noted, medical costs are continuing to mount and it is unknown how long before Juan will be able to return to work. Should you wish to donate funds to Juan and family please do so in his full name: Jose Antonio Aviles Salvatierra at the Todos Santos Bancomer bank, account number: 1231047361.

Comments, Questions and Answers

Information About Sewage Overflow Wanted by The Gringo Gazette - I work for the Gringo Gazette and we'll be publishing an article about the sewage overflow this Weds. morning in the next edition of the paper. We're hoping people (perhaps the concerned bystander) can provide us with more information about what's being done, and why there was no initial response from the parties contacted, would also be helpful. You may contact Jennifer Leigh Rosen, jenniferleighrosen[-at-]yahoo.com, our writer in TS, or myself with info and/or photos. - Lindsey Donner, lindsey[-at-]gringogazette.com, Cabo San Lucas

It Is Not A Sewage Treatment Pond. - It is an open cesspool on the dune holding raw untreated sewage pumped directly from the pump house at the end of lower La Cachora. For more than 15 years there have been promises of a sewer treatment plant. - Todos Santos

Lost One Of Our Truck Rack Cross Bars - We lost one of our Yakima rack cross bars off our work truck, we think somewhere on the dirt roads in the Todos Santos/Pescadero area. It is a round, black cross bar about 5' long, with the rail clips attached at each end. The clips have the name "Yakima" embossed on the inside. Sure would appreciate its return. - Alan Thompson, alan[-at-]baja1.com, 612 117 0484/530 313 5225, Todos Santos

Looking For Photographer Michael? - I am looking for a photographer named Michael who took pictures for our Optimist Club's KidSmart project in Cabo San Lucas last year on several occasions. I lost his email address in a move. Cathie Smith, cabocathie[-at-]gmail.com, 575-993-8227

Building In Todos Santos 2 - To add to Sylvia's info, for those of you that have property that abuts a road or access and would like to build any permanent structure on your property line I would recommend that you get an Alinamiento done through Catastro. This is to determine the right of way of the road in question and also any setback from your property line that is required by the county and needs to be done before a county survey. By the way, the only legally recognized survey of your property must be done through Catastro. The setback on my property is five meters. This could have ruined my day if I had found this out after already constructing a permanent structure on my property line. This situation has come up on numerous projects that I have been involved in and I know that the neighbors who have such structures have built in the setback area and are, of course, unaware of this fact. Your property line may in fact not be your building line. - James Black, merlo4u[-at-]earthlink.net, Todos Santos

Pet Corner

Three Beautiful Little Puppies Left - We still have three beautiful little female puppies left. Born on Easter Sunday, they will be seven weeks old tomorrow and are ready to go to their Forever Homes. They are all healthy and have had an excellent head start with plenty to eat, daily care and handling. They are eating solid food and have all been well socialized. As a condition of adoption, we prefer that these puppies be adopted to responsible, private homes, and that all pups will be spayed when they are a little older.

The mother is a Shepherd cross and the Father is a Boxer cross. Both parents are healthy, and good-sized dogs. The puppies will be medium to large dogs and should make great companions and protectors. To see more pictures of these puppies, please go here:
