"Youth In Video Program" - The Tecolote Bookstore is now selling the DVD “LA CAMARA DE LOS SECRETOS” (Secrets of the Camera). This is the first film made by children participating in the “Youth in Video Program”. This documentary was featured in the 5th Todos Santos International Latino Film Festival, 2008. Twenty-five rural/rancho children ages 6-12 took a camera into their homes and classroom and recorded their lives and culture. Professionally edited with English subtitles. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the rural lifestyle of local children and their families. A great gift for any classroom or cultural exchange opportunity. Baja Ferry Trip Report (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - I recently took Baja Ferries from La Paz to Topolobampo, and my ticket including myself and my vehicle was $173, and the cabin was $73. My ticket included a hot meal which was very tasty. The cabin was clean, with extra water, and blankets. The price of crossing is usually measured by the length of your vehicle and my truck is about 18 feet long.
My dogs were safe in my truck, just below the passenger deck, and not buried in the belly of the ship. If you tell the officials who do measure your vehicle that you have pets (mascotas) in your vehicle they always put you up on Level 4. In all the years I have traveled on the new Baja Ferry, this year will be my 4th year traveling via Baja Ferries with my dogs, I have never ended up in the belly of the ship. You are usually last to load and the first off the ship, what could be better than that? Met some one who put their dog into the kennels supplied by the ferry, these kennels are also on Level 4, which is right below where the passengers are, and he said the kennel was clean, and safe. His dog was supplied with water and a soft clean mat to lie on for the duration of the trip.
The trip from the ferry, was uneventful. I took the toll road and it cost about $50, and there was lots of road construction, widening the road, adding more Pemex Stations, and convenient stores. This will be better in the future. We stayed at the Hotel Marina the night we landed, $35. Clean rooms, good working air conditioners, dogs allowed in the rooms, and a restaurant that opens up at 7:00AM. The ride from Topolobampo to the border is just under 500 miles. Because of the construction and road stops we stayed in Santa Ana, that evening about 100 miles from the border, Mission Motel, also allowed dogs in the rooms, and was about $40. Clean, with a restaurant across the street. All in all it was an enjoyable trip. Lots of places to stop and water dogs and take a break from driving. Sylvia, treaturfeet[-at-]yahoo.com
Canadian Consulate Question - Can anyone tell me if there is another Canadian Consul in the area (other than Peggy Dilman in San Jose, who is apparently away until November), who would be qualified to write a letter on official letterhead that I require? - Willa, bajawilla[-at-]yahoo.ca, 624 122-6511
Response To Black Lagoon Health Risks - This is in response to “Anonymous’” statements concerning the raw sewage release from the Todos Santos Kakamo (cesspool). Though I won’t try and can’t diminish the seriousness of the situation and the need for remedy, the spreading of exaggerated area effects, timelines, and distances needs to be discussed. My own research has found that anonymous’ statements were 100% to +1000% exaggerated concerning length of danger times and lengths of distance affected. Although we all can find ‘statistics’, anecdotal hear say and information to back up personal agendas we might have, the primary source for my research was Orange County California Heath Agency, Dept Public Health Services Program Manager Larry Honeybourne.
Larry has over 25 years of dealing directly with this type of situation which, unfortunately, happens with surprising regularity not only in California but all over the world as well. I encourage people to do their own research as well. I am happy to relate the conversations I had with Larry concerning our situation here, but as I am not an official sewage or health professional of any sort, I cannot publicly make any recommendation or finding. That would need to be done by the local health agency or your own research.

Revolution For Cats And Dogs - First off, I'm not a Veterinarian so anything you read here should be confirmed with your Vet FIRST before attempting this. Use this information completely at your own risk. I have only tested this using Revolution, and all the info here applies ONLY to this product and ONLY to adult cats. Also, some cats or dogs may be allergic to various flea medications and may have an adverse reaction in any event.
Many of you may be familiar with using "spot" medications like Revolution to treat your dogs and cats for fleas and ticks. If you have a lot of dogs and cats (like us), this can get expensive to keep up the treatments every month. And it's really important to maintain continuous treatment for at least six months just to kill off the resident flea population once an area is infested.
But there is a way to save money. Turns out the active ingredient in some dog and cat versions of some flea medications is exactly the same, only the amount is different. This means you can buy a tube of Revolution for large dogs (81 to 130 lbs) and then divide it up for use on smaller dogs and/or cats. I have also heard this works with Advantage but I have not tested this nor do I know the dosage that should be used. NOTE: This apparently IS NOT true with Advantix, Bio Spot, Advantage-Multi and many other types of flea medications. DO NOT USE the dog version of these medications on your cat. It can kill them.
With Revolution, the dosage is the really important difference. The manufacturer's recommended minimum dose of the active ingredient for cats or dogs is 2.7 mg per pound (6 mg/kg) of body weight. A 0.5 mL tube of Revolution for Adult Cats (5 to 15 lbs) contains 45 mg of active ingredient. A 3 mL tube of Revolution for Large Dogs (81 to 130 lbs) contains 360 mg. of the same ingredient. This means you could treat up to eight adult cats, or four 30 lb dogs, or two 60 lb dogs, with a single tube of the large dog version. Since the two tubes cost about the same, you can get some idea of the potential savings. You can do the math to calculate how much you need for small to medium sized dogs.
Here is how to do this. You will need a syringe with a detachable needle. The syringe should have the little 0.1 ml tick marks on the side so that you can judge the correct dose. Since a 3 mL tube of Revolution for Large Dogs contains 360 mg. of active ingredient, and the tube for adult cats contains 45 mg., you would draw 0.375 mL to get a 45 mg. dose.
For cats, you may want to place a mark or a piece of tape on the side of the syringe just a little less than the 0.4 mL tick mark so you can easily see how much dosage to draw. Remove the cap from the tube of Revolution and insert the syringe needle into the tip. Draw out the required amount and withdraw the needle. Now hold the syringe upright and REMOVE THE NEEDLE from the syringe body being careful not to spill the contents (or stick yourself). Now, you can place the tip of the syringe body on the skin beneath the hair at the base of your cat's s skull and eject the contents. Make sure you don't put it down between their shoulders because cats can lick the medication off this area.
That's it! Replace the caps on the tube of Revolution and the syringe and you're good to go. If you can't use all the tube of Revolution at one time, you can store it in the refrigerator for the next time. I don't know how long it will keep but I would think you should use all of it within two to three months. Here is a link to a PDF document containing more information on recommended dosage and application: www.revolution4dogs.com/PAHimages/compliance_pdfs/US_EN_RV_compliance.pdf - Alan Thompson, alan[-at-]baja1.com, Todos Santos
