How To Minimize Environmental Impact On The Beaches Of Todos Santos During Turtle Nesting Season -
- Francesca, lasirena_ts[-at-]hotmail.com, www.lasirenakayaksurf.com, 145-0353, Todos Santos1. Never drive on the beach
2. Never leave trash on the beach
3. Never make fires on the beach (the glow inhibits nesting)
4. Don't shine flashlights in the face of a nesting sea turtle
5. Turn off exterior lighting if you live in towns near nesting beaches
6. Stay at a distance of at least 10 feet from nesting turtles unless a trained guide directs you
7. Support the local economy and reduce the need for poaching
8. Donate to conservation programs such as Todos Tortugueros A.C.
9. Support fishermen who fish with lines and hooks as opposed to nets
10. Never buy turtle meat or eggs
11. Reduce your carbon footprint by walking, bicycling, or sharing a ride
12. Never build homes on the fragile dunes
13. Make sure your construction waste is properly disposed of.
14. Participate in Eco-Tourism programs such as La Sirena Eco-Adventures which minimize impact, contribute to conservation programs, and provide jobs to locals
More Graffiti - Awoke to a new message on my newly painted wall. Same gringa (yes a female). Political message in English with the same backward swastika signature. She was seen doing it. I now have her name. - Todos Santos
Driving Trucks South Stuffed With Goodies - I am sure the person offering to load his 12-foot box cargo truck with purchases and then driving it south has good intentions, but maybe it would be best to clarify both the written and unwritten "policies" about driving south with merchandise. First, ALL trucks are supposed to pull over at the San Ysidro crossing, by getting in the right lane, and then meeting the customs officials waiting there. If you have a passenger pickup and nothing to declare you may get away with crossing in one of the left lanes, but anyone driving a box cargo truck with US plates is very likely to get pulled over. SECOND you will not only have to deal with the international border crossing but probably 3 or 4 more military checkpoints at which you may have to prove that duties have been paid for all items in the truck. Yes, you may get away with a bribe but there is no guarantee. It all might get confiscated. THIRD, as many of you know, there exists a one-time exemption for people moving to Mexico from the US or Canada but even this can be difficult and a truck loaded with items from various individuals would not be covered. So it is possible you might get lucky and drive this truck all the way down, but I would not recommend it. - Jim Elfers, bajasurvey[-at-]yahoo.com
