Recycling Update - The municipality of La Paz in new and exciting alliance with Pueblo Magico and Todos Tortugueros, A.C., have identified 11 local sites (schools and internados) and in early October will open 7 small (plastic only) recycling centers in Todos Santos, Pescadero and Elias Calles. The program provides each site with large containers, gives talks and age appropriate workshops, and coordinates the bi-monthly pick-up of the recyclable material. Pubelo Magico and Todos Tortugueros, A.C will develop and provide the in-school presentations, workshops, a video and educational materials for kids and their parents.
Pueblo Magico, Todos Tortugueros, A.C. and a group of sixth graders will be coordinating and operating the recycling center or “Center de Acopio” in the Primary School, Meliton Albañez, near the Red Cross on calle Obregon and Huerto. We will be open Fridays from 11:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. This is the only center that will be receiving glass and cardboard. All money earned from the sale of plastic goes directly to the schools; a benefit will be held in late October to support the extensive educational part of the program.
Recycling Center Opening Day: Friday October 3, 11:30 A.M.

A Tough Subject - Few like to talk about this, but it is inevitable that one day you may pass away in your host country. Please keep in regular contact with your friends, particularly those who live alone. Here are things that whomever you entrust to take care of your remains needs.
1. Color copy of your passport (several are better).
2. Copy of current immigration status (the page with the picture is sufficient).
3. Copy of your registered will (in Spanish).
4. Extra set of keys to your house.
5. Phone number of relative to be notified in the US (or wherever).
6. Names of the parents.
7. Status of friend or relative of person taking care of your remains (passport and
FM3 or FM2).
8. As always, having a Spanish speaking person around helps and you may wish to hire an interpreter for a few hours.
Also, it is best to inform someone close to you about how you would like your remains to be handled in case the original will is not immediately available. The person who discovers the body should report to the Judiciales in person and they are open 24hrs a day. A representative of the judiciales will go with you to the house and arrange for a Coroner’s vehicle, which might take several hours. Wait with them, as they will tell you what to do next after the body is removed.
After the body was removed we were told to make funeral arrangements from here (Todos Santos) and then go back to the Judiciales. From there we went to the funeral parlor in La Paz, paid half of the fee and filled out a number of forms. Make sure the spelling of the name is correct. The funeral parlor is opened 24 hrs a day, the fee for a cremation is MN8,060.00, and they contacted the US consulate. They took us to the Procuradoria General de Justicia, Medical Examiner’s office for the official report, which then was certified in the office of the Judiciales in the same building. Both are open 24hrs a day. Then back to the funeral parlor for a temporary certificate.
The funeral home issued a certificate of disposition of the body the next day, and their representative took us to the Records Office for the registration of death. Certified death certificates (Acta Certificado de Defuncion) can be obtained at this office. The Consulate will call you and you will have to go there with the death certificate, which they then will “authenticate” to be used for insurance and other purposes.
Other points to remember:
1. The person who inherits your property is named in the fideicomiso, regardless of what you say in your will. If you want someone else to inherit your property, you will have to change the fideicomiso at a Notaria Publica.
2. If the deceased has a bank account here, the bank will have to be notified and given a death certificate and a copy of the will. If the beneficiary of the account is abroad, he/she will have to provide a birth certificate, copy of passport, and a “carta de solicitud” (request for release of the monies) in Spanish. All three of these documents have to be “apostilled” in the U.S. by the state department.
If a different beneficiary is listed in the will than in the file the bank holds, the original bank document prevails.
3. You will need to cancel their P.O. box.
