Internado Needs Fans And A Washer - The Internado or Boarding school for students attending the Primary School, Miguel Hidalgo, located near la Esquina at the entrance to la Cachora is in need or fans for the dormitories and a clothes washer. The Internado hosts 60 kids from area ranches who live too far away to get to and from school everyday, so the SEP (Secretary of Education) provides dormitories, healthly food, social workers and teachers who help with homework. It is a caring and nurturing environment for kids age 4-12.

Profe. Rodolfo and his wife are very dedicated to the students and they would be grateful for any donations..Contact the Profe. directly M-F at 145-0382, stop by and visit or contact Patricia Baum to facilitate your donation. - Patricia Baum, teampaty1[-at-]hotmail.com, 612 145-0882

Muchas Gracias - When a "Muchas Gracias" doesn't seem like enough, a public posting in the ONION is certainly called for!! The "Jardin de Kinder" in Los Barriles now has a working computer network with some incredibly appreciative teachers and a principal that's beyond words when it comes to gratitude. Each classroom/teacher now has a working laptop to use to pull down study guides, co-ordinate scheduling with each other, create and distribute educational materials - i.e., worksheets, tests that they might not have had access to without their new laptops. Basically, you have all opened up a world to them that before was just a dream. You have all turned that dream into a reality that warms my heart.

Our kindergarten laptop donation drive was completed last month with the delivery of a laptop from Gerhard in West Linn, Oregon via the "Nikki" express (she lives in Lake Oswego, OR) and has a home in Todos as well. The handoff went well as Nikki picked up the laptop from Gerhard, delivered it to Susan from Los Barriles who was in Todos for the day, and it now joins the others at the kindergarten. (Now that's teamwork). A huge muchas gracias to the many loving souls who donated laptops, programs, printers, faxes, and assorted DVD, stereo and other media equipment. Another thank you goes to those who contributed the Spanish conversion programs to bring all the laptops up to speed for the teachers. (Robin from Santana Iron Works in San Bartolo with the magic CD downloads.)

NONE of this was possible without Doug Pearson, "computer guy extraordinaire." He single-handedly put all of these beauties back together, brought them up to snuff and speed, and then networked them together throughout the kindergarten. Each classroom now has a laptop, printer, and a teacher who knows how to use their new tools. I'd post Doug's email address, but he might kill me, so if you need directions to a guy who can solve all of your computer woes or dreams - just email me at janel91436[-at-]aol.com and I'll "hook you up."

There is a complete list of our "angels" who so graciously gave from the heart, posted at the kindegarten on the main street coming into town. For those of you not sure which structure houses the kindergarten, it's on the right side of the main street BEFORE you come to the library and the park in the middle of the road (the one across the street from the Palmas). The steps leading to the kindergarten on the right side have the wording "Dra. De Montessori" on the front. That houses all three grades of pre-school, pre-K and Kindergarten.

Now - for those of you thinking, "I just upgraded my laptop and I could have given my old one to them. I just didn't know/forgot/didn't think it was worth anything.". There is still time for you to do a good deed. We're continuing the dream as we begin to work with the "Primario" - 1st through 6th grades - and help realize their dreams as well. These laptops can help the children IN the classrooms find information that otherwise would not be available to them. I'd like to see a couple of workstations in each room for the kids to go to when they have spare study hall time. So check those closets, dust off those boxes, upgrade those workstations and help our kids at the same time. Not here in Baja right now? That's OK too - I'll come to you to pick up the equipment. Our AMAZING network of fairy godmothers and godfathers will get your goods down to the school.

If you've ever questioned the spirit of our community - you can throw that question out the window now. What I've seen is a community of the most loving, giving, caring individuals pull together for the sake of our kids. Thank you, East Capers and Southern Baja-ites! I'm proud to be a part of this wonderful group! Janel and Sophia and David, US toll free 877.244.6219 - Janel Faraci, janel91436[-at-]aol.com, 624.137.0686, Los Barriles

East Cape Guild Cook Books - The East Cape Guild Scholarship Fund is very proud to announce the arrival of this year's East Cape Kitchens Cook Book!! This year Guild Cookbook divas Keri Bowden and Joan Pratt created something very special for you!! The Cookbook is titled "RECIPES from BAJA," a wonderful collection of Mexican recipes. Breakfast recipes include "Nona's Huevos Rancheros with A Special Sauce", this special sauce makes this dish the best you have tasted!

You will find a chapter on Salsa's, Sauces and Moles, plus Entrees that will have you pulling the pans out to satisfy your fantasy of creating those Mexican dishes you have dreamed about. Once again the Cookbook is $18.00 with about 400 recipes. You can receive your book prior to its arrival in Baja by emailing Keri and letting her know how many you want and she will let you know cost of shipping. Keep in mind there will not be a Christmas Art Show in Los Barriles this year, so you may want to purchase these great gifts ahead of time this year.

All profits go to our East Cape students who want to achieve their dreams of attending high school and creating a better life for themselves and their families. Thank you. Keri bajawife[-at-]hotmail.com

What's The Best Setup For Internet Access In Las Tunas? - Hola, What is the best way to get internet access in Las Tunas area ( Camino Internacional)?? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Alan Cooper, tropic.aldo[-at-]yahoo.com, maritascasitas.com, 406-549-6767, Todos Santos

RE: Blue Bottle Stings - Another option for Blue Bottles stings is to mix any type of meat tenderizer and fresh water if you have it, salt water if not. Make a paste out of it and cover the area where you have been stung. Works great, takes the sting out right away. This is after you have removed all the tentacles and rinsed. Works better than anything else I have ever tried. I was given this tip from a local Gringo doctor from San Pedrito last year after my 4 yr old daughter was strung twice in a week. - Wade Dayley, info"bearcovecottages.ca, 1-877-949-7939, Pescadero

RE: Harassment on The Beach - I visited with PROFEPA last week to hand in our reports of the incident on the beach and had quite a lengthy discussion with a couple of PROFEPA agents. For your information this is what they informed: Walking dogs on the beach is not against the law. It is not something you should be arrested for. However, as we all know, PROFEPA have their own rules and they said that all due care must be taken with dogs on the beach. Keep out of the Federal Zone, i.e. 20 meters from high tide. Keep away from the turtle nursery. Be very vigilant and keep away from any turtle tracks or nests. In other words, there are no hard and fast rules. But be careful and for the time being it might be a good idea to walk with a friend in order you always have a witness should you encounter 'Turtle Man', as he is affectionately known! Whilst 'Turtle Man' does not work for PROFEPA, he does work for one of the turtle organizations who work with/alongside PROFEPA. If he encounters any 'trouble' on the beach he should not be calling the police. He should call PROFEPA direct who will send one of their agents to find out what the problem is.

Any threatening, intimidating or discourteous behavior should be reported to PROFEPA in writing. You should address all such reports to LIC. MARITZA MUNOS VARGAS and LIC. JAVIER CHAVES, DEPARTMENTO DE DENUNCIAS Y QUEJAS DE LEGACION PROFEPA. Their offices are on the corner of Padre Kino and Encinas in La Paz. Take a copy of your report with you and ask them to stamp and sign it as proof of receipt. If 'Turtle Man' does call the police and they also act in an intimidating manner, send a copy of your report also to El Comandante who has said he wishes to be kept informed of all such incidents where the police have been involved. Just for good measure we also gave copies to the Delegado and Fernando Salas so please feel free to follow suit and let them all know what is going on.

Whilst with PROFEPA they also advised that with regard to horses- you can ride your own private horse on the beach to get from A to B and back to A but you are not permitted to take rental horses on the beach, or make any monetary gain, without having a concession which will unlikely be granted on a turtle nesting beach. Again, with a private horse, pay all due diligence and keep out of turtle nesting areas and the turtle nursery. Vehicles - all vehicles are prohibited from the beach including the police unless in the case of an emergency. These are just some guidelines which I hope will help but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. - Anita Harris anitaharris[-at-]hughes.net, Todos Santos
