Todos Santos Phone Book - You’re about to see posters at all stores & local hang-outs (written in Spanish) announcing the next Phone Book. All residents from Elias Calles to San Pedro can also be listed, since they “relate” to us in Todos Santos & Pescadero. There is a notebook at La Esquina Café in Todos Santos (by Casa Dracula) so people can add their name & number or make changes from the previous book. All residents are listed alphabetically by their first name.
La Esquina is open Monday-Saturday 7A.M.-7 P.M. all summer long. The deadline is November 28th to publish in January. Please let your Mexican friends & workers know that they can include their skill or trade, next to their name in the resident listings if they would like to (and this is not offered to immigrants like us). There will be periodic notices once a month
thru November in the Baja Western Onion and El Calendario. Remember November.

More Way Good News - When Dale Townsend heard the amazing story of Leirion's grand daughter's National Spanish Honor Society far away in Guilford, Connecticut, raising $1,000 U.S. for a plumbing and window project here at the Internado boarding school, she asked if the Palapa Society could jump in and be of any help. It just so happened the finish work still needed to be completed, replacing some bathroom tiles and cementing around every single new fixture. So the finale of the project was funded thanks to the Palapa Society and a very creative local tile artiste, Alfredo Villalobos.
The Connecticut connection? Young Leah came to Todos Santos when she was three to visit her grandma, Leirion, and then again at 15. When her Spanish Club was looking for a service project, Leah suggested the Internado boarding school. Leah will be off to Tufts University this fall where she will probably continue to create more wonderful miracles. Go Leah! - Judy Tegland, purplepapagayo[-at-]yahoo.com, 145-0708, Todos Santos

Unaccompanied Pets - Can anyone tell me if any of the airlines flying from Baja to the States will accept unaccompanied pets? Or is there anyone flying that would be willing to accompany a small sweet quiet female foxy terrier to California or Seattle areas? She is an excellent traveller. Unexpected and urgent family matters have forced us into this situation. Thanks. - Eliza, wildponyplaying[-at-]hotmail.com, Todos Santos

Washboard Roads - I am going to answer Saturday's question about washboard roads so that everybody can read it. There must be many of you wondering exactly where washboard bumps come from as your teeth are rattling! Washboard bumps are waves caused by the push of the tires as water waves are caused by the push of the wind. Think about it, a nice flat ocean then some wind and some rippling on the water. A nice flat road (just scraped), then some traffic and some rippling on the road. Being waves they obey the laws of physics. One of the interesting things is that they travel in the direction of the impulse that caused them, just like waves on the ocean.
Years ago a young physicist measured them for motion and sure enough they moved but very slowly. Here is the most interesting part to me, the waves on one side of the street roll in the opposite direction as the waves on the other side, they are being pushed in opposite direction by the tires. I hope that knowing this helps your attitude while things are falling off your car and your suspension is taking a beating, you are just helping the waves to roll along. I've known this for a long time and it doesn't help my attitude one bit. We cause the washboard. Carl Marsch, carlomaria[-at-]sbcglobal.net, 310 8334396, Todos Santos
