Todos Tortugueros, A.C. Activities - JOIN TODOS TORTUGUEROS , A.C. and participate in the 24th annual California Coastal Clean-up Day, Saturday September 20th, from 8:30-11:30am. We will start at Punta Lobos and work our way nouth. Other members will work in and around La Pastora. La Bocana is another area which needs clean-up. Our group members have been working in collaboration with ASUPMATOMA, AC (who have held the federal permit for this zone since 1999) in various turtle conservation efforts since 2002 with (documented) excellent results and good relations with citizens of Todos Santos both nationals and foreigners.
Last year SEMARNAT, issued Enedino Castillo’s, Grupo Tortuguero de Todos Santos, A.C. or GTTS, a duplicate permit for the same species of turtle, same time frame (October-December) and same zone, so we have been coordinating our efforts with the group since July. The two groups have been doing the night patrols together since July. GTTS now controls the turtle nursery and all turtle release activities. All are welcome at the turtle nursery in La Cachora to release baby golfina (Olive Ridley) turtles every evening from 6pm to dark.
For information about golfina turtles releases now through mid-December, contact Enedino Castillo, 612 115-2465, email grupotortuguerots[-at-]yahoo.com.mx. For information about Todos Tortugueros, AC activities including the coastal clean-up, leatherback turtle conservation (October-March), education programs, festivals and recycling or email Patricia Baum, teampaty1[-at-]hotmail.com, www.todostortugueros.org, 612 145-0882

Mobilizing Americans Abroad To Register For An Absentee Ballot - This is such an important time in history. We can't let the day to vote on Nov 4th pass us by. Mexican Residency Visa Warning (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - Well it is now official. The computer at the airport and the rest of the Immigration offices now pick-up if you have an FM-2 or -3 and are using a FM-T or Tourist Visa. One of my people was just caught and cited on the spot. He must now go before an Official later this week to find out the penalty.
You CANNOT arbitrarily change your immigration status at whim. I also suggest you keep a copy folded up in your wallet at all times. I shall post the results of the Hearing when I have more information. - Dennis C. Riley, Los Barriles
Questions: Does anyone know if this applies if a person has a recently expired FM-2 or -3? Does the holder of an expired FM-2 or 3 have to do something to extinguish the residency permit first? Please post answers here: http://www.bajawesternonion.com/submitarticle.asp

Harassment On The Beach - I live in Barrio San Sebastian. On Thursday morning while walking with my dog to the beach I was passed by a truck full of policemen on their way to the beach also. They parked on a sand dune and two of them jumped out and walked towards the beach. At the same moment a man on a quad drove towards them. From where I was standing on the beach, it appeared that one policeman jumped on the quad and another one walked on the beach all heading towards the turtle nesting site. As I was walking and playing with my dog. I noticed that all the police were now standing on the dunes.
A few minutes later, the man on the quad came back to the dune from the desert side of the beach and the policeman who had been on the quad returned on foot. The next thing I noticed is that everyone was pointing in my direction. Then, as the cops got back in their truck to leave, the man on the quad sped towards me and snarled at me that "dogs are not allowed on the beach." I laughed and asked him, “since when?” He replied,”The beach is private property and it's against maritime law to have dogs on the beach.” He told me that the police would arrest me and take my dog. I told him that I have lived here for many years and know that is not true. He got angry and told me that I've been warned and I'd better watch out!
This man seemed dangerous and aggressive to me and I have been scratching my head, trying to figure out what was really going on,at the beach. After reading Anita’s story, which is so similar to mine, I am wondering more than ever what was happening on the beach which required that I be lied to and intimidated. I wonder also who else has had this kind of experience? - Catanya, Todos Santos
Reply To 'No Dogs On Beach' Incident - My wife inherited a cop's sense of funny business, and she thinks the guys on the ATV were up to no good, and wanted to chase off any witnesses. Notice the lack of request for mordida. What can we do if our beach has become a link in the drug highway? I can't imagine poachers being that violent, and the policeman driver sounds more scared than angry. - Tom Gafford, tag[-at-]gafford.com

We Just Lost (and Found) Lucas Again - Hello everyone. On Monday our dog was again lost at Camino del Bajio near Bancomer. Fortunately with the collaboration of many people and children in the village we found him. Someone took him away and had him in a house in the colony San Vicente. It is possible that some people steal things or pets simply to get a reward, sell them for money or exchange them for drugs.
It is important that if you see some pet or thing that might be stolen or someone offers any, immediately inform the rest of the community by the Baja Western Onion, sending emails to your contacts, and telling your neighbors and friends in order to spread the word. We have found that most people in the village are very positive and helpful. Many thanks and greetings to everyone. -- Belinda, Todos Santos
