Cabo San Lucas Par Vial Projects To Be Accelerated - In order to minimize the effects of the construction work on area businesses, local residents and tourists, double shifts will be used as of August 15. Starting on Aug. 15, the double shifts will be used on the construction projects on the street and utility improvements on the so called Par Vial project in CSL. The objective of the double shifts is to reduce the time it will take to finish the improvements, minimize the inconvenience and effects on the area's residents, merchants and tourists. - M. E. Martinez, mavericktradingco[-at-]yahoo.com, 045-811-300-9067, Cabo San Lucas

Tourism Down, Hotel Occupancy Falls By 63% - Tourism in Mexico's Beach Resorts continues to fall. Mexico attributes decrease in tourism to the U.S.A.'s economic crisis; in Los Cabos, the taxi-tourist transportation conflict hits hard. The summer months have seen the contraction of tourism in Mexico's beach destinations by as much as 52% compared to 2007. The resorts that report the highest decreases are Los Cabos, Loreto, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Huatulco and Cancun. In Cabo the reduction compared to last year is 14% according to the Mexico's Secretary of Tourism.

The ongoing, never ending conflict in Los Cabos between the Tourist Transportation companies and the Taxi Operators has affected its image, tourism businesses-especially hotels, restaurants, boat rental companies, ecotours and car rental agencies. Mexico and International newspapers, and internet web sites continue to report that foreign tourists have abandonded Los Cabos taking a negative image with them and claiming that they will not return. "We don't see that there is a demand for tourism in Cabo for the latter part of the year. The impact of all of the protests has definitely affected Los Cabos and it can affect others," expressed Sallie Rawlings, Director of Communications of Travel Impressions.

This week Federal, State, and Municipal authorities met to draw up what they hope is a final solution to the conflict, details will be released this coming week. - Mario E. Martinez, mavericktradingco[-at-]yahoo.com, 045-811-300-9067, Cabo San Lucas

Can Someone Take An Envelope To Todos Santos? - I have an envelope containing a few ounces of small electronic parts I need to get from the US to Todos Santos. Can anyone carry it down for me? I can mail it to you and arrange for someone to pick it up in TS. - Alan Thompson, alan[-at-]baja1.com, 805 598 7908, Todos Santos

Update on Mexicana Airlines Cancellations (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - When I read on BPE that Mexicana has canceled all flights from Sacramento to Los Cabos for the months of September and October I called them to see about their November flights. They plan to resume this route in November. Thank you for the heads up! If you hear anything different, please post here! - Lori

Police Update - Recently I met new Comandante Rogelio Lizardi and he “elected” me to be the liaison with the English speaking community (don’t ask me why), he wanted to relay that if there’s any crime to report it to Policia Minesterial, or directly to me. Today (8-9-08) he stopped by my office with a red gas powered lawn motor (in really nice condition!!), and a car battery asking if anyone was claiming this stolen recently. I told him I don’t know, and he suggested that I post this on the Onion just in case. - Bill, info[-at-]bajabell.com, www.paraisocalifornia.com, 044-612-132-4710, Pescadero

Robbery In The Huertas and Costco - Well, after 10 yrs in the beautiful, tranquil huertas of Pescadero, the rateros hit. Saturday night, 9th July they pulled the palo de arco and nasty palm leaf stems out of the fence - wired up the top two strands of barbed wire and wired down the bottom two strands (this is heavy barbed wire, stretched with a real stretcher). Snipped the points off agave plants and dug up a few more and made a nice little rat hole through the fence. Stole my 60W (2'x2') solar panel off the boat palapa roof c/w small charge controller and cable with plug to charge my boat batteries. Of course they stole two batteries which were sitting out (waiting to be recycled). They're just stupid pendejos, but our paradise has been compromised.

The other break in was in the Costco parking lot. Broke the truck lock stole my briefcase with ckbooks, facturas, personal info etc - digital camera...What did Costco management say?? "Well, they only target gringo vehicles as they know locals have nothing to steal"!! Nice!

Guess we're just going to have to barricade ourselves in - just like the States - maybe get gun permits? Mace? Land Mines? - Mike Carter, mike[-at-]todossantos.cc, 1450444, Pescadero

Happiest 60th Birthday D J!!! - Birthdays are an opportunity to reconnect with those we care about. Even though we are far apart, I'm with you in spirit on your special day, August 21st! Remembering you on your birthday and always, your little (and younger!) sis in Carlsbad. Love you bro... - Kay Ruby, redruby1954[-at-]hotmail.com

Pet Corner

Gita Comes Home! - After a full week of worry, Gita, our cat who went missing late July, came home to our casita in Todos Santos-- just in time for her to make the trip North to California! Alan and I took three Mexican-born-and bred cats with us back to our home in Placerville, CA, in early August. We now have an even dozen, 10 of whom were rescues from Todos Santos and Pescadero (Gita was just a few weeks old when she was left in a box with her brother Curly on the doorstep of Dr. Franzoni on a morning I just happened to have a Vet appointment. What's a couple more :) They are all happy cats, enjoying the Gold Country canyon they now call home.

Quote of the Day: " I wanted no part of politics. And I wasn't in Berlin to compete against any one athlete. The purpose of the Olympics, anyway, was to do your best. As I'd learned long ago from Charles Riley, the only victory that counts is the one over yourself. " - Jesse Owens (1913-1980), American Athlete, 4 time Gold Medalist in Track and Field at the 1936 Olympic Games
