Originally published in 1926, Today and Tomorrow, written by the world's most famous automaker, Henry Ford, reveals the thinking that changed industry forever.
Ford's ideas have never stopped having an impact. Taiichi Ohno, the creator of the Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing system, freely acknowledges that a key stimulus to JIT was his close reading of Ford. Today these same ideas have re-emerged to revitalize industry around the world.
Today and Tomorrow chronicles Ford's progressive vision. It was his credo of using low-cost, high-quality production to win market share that inspired the Japanese to do the same. In these 24 chapters, Ford discusses topics that are just as relevant today as they were in 1926, at the height of Henry Ford's success:
· Money, power, and big business · Work standards, time, and motion · Learning from waste · Wages, hours, and employee motivation · The power of education
Today, Henry Ford's ideas warrant a second look. He doubled wages, cut the price of a car in half, and produced over 2 million units a year. Time has not diminished the impact of his business philosophy, or his profound influence on worldwide industry. You will be enlightened by what you read and intrigued by the words of this colorful and remarkable man.
My comments:
I have an abridged audio book of this book and have enjoyed listening to it many times. In fact, in my eBay store, I have sold many of this title all over the world. Recently, I've purchased the book and have enjoyed it unabridged and have enjoyed sharing it anew.
Of all the business leaders of the past that I have studied, Henry Ford is one of the more interesting. His story is not only fascinating because he was a key leader at the beginning of a vast industry, but even more interesting in his business philosophy which is what made him so successful in the first place, and was so different than those in the same field around him.
Of all the subjects Henry Ford highlights, it is his philosophy of service that is his focus. It is from this one point that I think this title is worth reading again today because these ideas are timeless. In addition, there is much to learn from the rest of the book that can easily be applied today. Included in that would be his philosophy on money and borrowing.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in business.
Enjoy!

Interesting Welder/Crane Body By Harbor |

Welder Bodies come in so many different modifications, that almost any body could be a "Welder Body." Here's yet another way. This one is an 11' Harbor Service Body with 56" high compartments. It is mounted on a 108" CA chassis so that allows 2' of space in front of the body for the Miller Trailblazer welding machine. As you can see, this welder is mounted on a sliding tray which extends all the way out from the body and supports the weight nicely.
Mounted on the top right is a Venturo ET25KX crane with crane rest and outrigger package mounted as shown in the last photo. Just think of all the stuff we can put in this wonderful set of closets. In addition, this unit has the cargo bed enclosure which keeps the things in the center compartment out of the weather, and more importantly, out of sight.
All in all, this is an awesome selection of features and benefits that could serve you well. Call Harbor at 1-800-433-9452 and visit their website at www.htbi.net. |
Full Line Of EC Cranes From Stellar |

Garner, Iowa - Stellar Industries, Inc. now offers a full line of easy to use electric/hydraulic cranes that use environmentally friendly, non-toxic hydraulic oil. The Stellar® EC Series has five models available in a range of 6,500 ft-lbs (.99 tm) up to 38,000 ft-lbs (5.25 tm). This new environmentally friendly crane line was developed based on customer requests and will enhance the current full line of the Stellar® heavy-duty mechanic service cranes.
The EC Series crane line incorporates both hydraulic and manual boom reach, with the EC6000 reaching out 21-feet. All the EC Series cranes have a short stow length and a low profile, both of which allow the crane to fit nicely behind the chassis cab when not in use.
The boom design of the EC Series line features a "Piggy-Back" or Double Boom design, providing considerably more strength than traditional square boom designs. This new crane line also boasts a true worm gear rotation of a full 410 degrees (EC2000 has a 340˚ rotation) that uses a high-strength steel ball bearing turntable gear, a high-strength steel worm gear, and a cast-steel worm gear housing.
The entire EC Series crane line also comes equipped with a state-of-the-art radio remote control and it also utilizes environmentally friendly hydraulic oil that is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and that is recyclable and biodegradable. Both come standard and are industry first features for this class of crane.
Other features worth noting include specifically designed and manufactured hydraulic cylinders for each particular model, allowing the crane to effectively and efficiently lift what it is designed to lift. The planetary winch system is equipped with a permanent magnet electric motor with a planetary gear reduction system that ensures the winch will never quit lifting before it reaches the cranes full rated capacity.
"In addition to the success we've experienced with the current heavy-duty crane line, we were getting numerous requests from our distributors and end users to market a more economical version of a electric/hydraulic crane," says Tim Davison, Product Manager, bodies and cranes. Davison continues, "Based on that market demand and the expertise we developed over the years with the previous models of mechanics cranes, it was the right decision to develop a feature laden crane at a lower price point." He continues, "We are confident the EC Series will dominate the electric/hydraulic crane market. Our lifting performance will meet or exceed that of other competitive cranes in this market class." Davison concludes, "But what will put this line above all the others is the great feature ensemble, which includes a radio remote control, a durable rotation system, the environmentally friendly hydraulic oil and the new piggy-back boom system, which brings the hex boom like strength to an economical price point."
Stellar Industries, Inc. was founded in 1990. It is an employee owned and operated manufacturer of hydraulic truck mounted equipment located in North Iowa. Products include hooklifts, container carriers, cable hoists, telescopic cranes, articulating cranes, and the X-Tra-Lift, as well as complete mechanic service truck packages, and tire service truck packages. Stellar is a progressive company that focuses on its people, as they are the key to making the products and the company successful.

Interesting Flatbed By North Bay Truck |
Here's another unique custom flatbed manufactured by North Bay Truck Body. This one is built on a Ford F550 chassis sold by Ron DuPratt Ford in Dixon, CA. The bed includes a 12' flatbed with crossbars on 12" centers and 1-1/8" Apitong hardwood flooring for 10' of the 12' length, with the remaining 2' covered with 1/8" diamond plate steel. It also sports a 3"x2" HD material rack with no long bars and includes Rack Straps with special lights for night work. Strobe lights are attached to the front section of the material rack.
The tall boxes at the front of the body are made by Protech and are 36"x18"x64" and are mounted by cutting away part of the flatbed. The roadside box has two adjustable shelves and the curbside box has a permanent shelf and a drawer section with 6-3" aluminum pull-out drawers. Two Protech underbed boxes measuring 18"x18"x18" add additional storage. There is a custom jackhammer box at the rear end of the box right of the bumper and step with lockable access door. Customer's vises and pipe vise are installed on the rear platform. (More pictures here: NBay FB

Isuzu Delivers For Angel Springs |

Isuzu delivers for Angel Springs and Bevan Bodies offers innovative solution for fresh marketing messages
Water cooler specialist Angel Springs has a refreshing solution to the challenge of keeping its promotional messages on its trucks bang up to date - with a little help from Isuzu Truck UK and bodybuilder Bevan Group.
The operator has just taken delivery of 7 seven from an order of 15 new Isuzu N75.190 7.5-tonners with Easyshift automated transmissions. All arrived via Angel Springs' long-term contract hire partner Fraikin, and are fitted with Bevan's fast access curtainslider bodies. Angel Springs has worked since its inception with Fraikin -the latest 7.5-tonne Isuzu's are the subject of six-year contract hire deals under which each will average 35,000 miles a year.
The first 7 trucks are all based at in Tring, Hertfordshire; the remaining 8 will operate from Wolverhampton and Halifax.
The Isuzu 7.5tonners with the Bevan bodies are ideally suited to multi-drop applications because the curtains are tensioned from front to back and have locks at both ends, so drivers have no time-consuming straps and buckles to contend with - to gain access they simply slide back the curtains, concertina-fashion, in seconds.
Each new Isuzu offers a payload of some 3.7 tonnes, sufficient to carry 160 20-litre bottles stored on Angel Springs' bespoke racking, as well as eight boxes of cups and a trolley. The vehicles will make up to 45 'drops' per day.
In addition to the challenge of providing easily operated and efficient delivery vehicles, Angel Springs also asked the bodybuilder to come up with a solution to the age-old problem of changing marketing messages on their trucks. If a solution could be found it would have to be one that was easy, quick and cost-effective to carry out. The Bevan Group rose to the challenge and all 15 trucks will be able to do just that.
On the rear of the body on each truck the Bevan Group has fitted a two-metre square panel that is interchangeable. This means that each truck can have a rear-facing panel that can be used to publicise the latest marketing initiatives by Angel Springs. Bevan has produced two of these aluminum-framed panels for each vehicle - one is always on the truck, the other is held at Bevan's production facility.
Every three months Angel Springs relay their latest artwork to the Bevan Group's graphics specialists, who transfer it to the panels. Technicians from Bevan's aftercare team then take the new panels out to the Angel Springs locations at which the vehicles are based. Once on site they can fit the new panels and return to base with the ones they've removed.
Some of Angel Springs' new trucks replace older vehicles that are being stood down but others represent a further extension to the company's fleet of 60 trucks and vans, the vast majority of which are 7.5-tonners.
Angel Springs was founded in 2003, from an amalgamation of three water companies, and is now the fastest growing water cooler company in the UK. See more from Isuzu UK at www.isuzutruck.co.uk. |

Transporting Race Cars With Isuzu Truck |

The Village Motors race team has turned to an Isuzu FVL 1400 to provide them with plenty of horsepower off the track.
Dave Newcombe's professionally built 2007 Pontiac GTO might fly down the quarter mile drag strip in 7.09 seconds, but it needs some help getting from garage to track.
And it's not just one car that needs transporting. Regularly travelling to competitions across Australia is a team of five (the Village Motors MotorSport's Pro Stock drag racing team), two race cars, tools and equipment.
Pro Stock drag racing cars are the highest development of 'street-appearing' four-seat sedans or coupes using V8 engines - and precious cargo for the Brisbane-based Village Motors team.
When the time came to replace their small gooseneck trailer, the team looked to Isuzu for a reliable and comfortable truck that would meet their requirements and perform well on the long-distance drives across states.
They purchased an Isuzu FVL 1400, which Dave said transports the two race cars with ease.
Dave and his team have developed a well-designed and innovative configuration. The long trailer is split into two sections: the rear holds up to two race cars plus tools and other equipment, and the front section houses an office and living quarters for the team, which is accessible via a door on the side of the trailer.
"It is a fantastic vehicle that offers us plenty of power," Dave said. "And we now also have the convenience of an office, which we work from while we're on the road."
For extra storage space, the trailer also incorporates a series of compartments in the empty spaces next to the wheels.
"The Isuzu FVL 1400 is a huge improvement on our previous transportation," Dave said.
According to Dave, the FVL 1400 is ideal for the team's highway driving, due to its spacious cab and Isri air suspension driver's seat that boasts pneumatic lumbar support and height, rake and automatic weight adjustment.
"The cab interior is very roomy and comfortable, so it's great for the long journeys across Queensland that we often endure," Dave said.
Mated to a nine speed air assisted shift transmission with synchromesh on the first eight gears, the FVL 1400's six cylinder, 24 valve SiTEC Series II 295 engine offers plenty of power for both urban conditions and out on the open road and is easy to drive. The truck also features cruise control and Hill Start Aid.
Keeping the driver and occupants safe is a range of safety features including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and driver airbag.
According to Dave, the Isuzu FVL's Hendrickson airbag suspension gives a much smoother ride, and is preferable over spring suspension for delicate loads like the team's race cars.
"In the competitive world of drag racing, the last thing we need is to arrive at a race meet and find that any of our equipment has been damaged in transit," Dave said.
"I look for reliability, quality and comfort in a vehicle, which is why we turned to Brisbane Isuzu for our new truck. There is no question that Isuzu produces the best trucks on the market."

Getting Ready Is The Best Part Of The Game |
"Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success."
Isn't that just the way. . . we want success and results, but we aren't willing to spend the time it takes to get ready for receiving it. Just think of what a young athlete must go through in terms of getting ready for many hours, days, weeks, months, years, in order to perform one time in something that most likely takes less than 5 minutes. Think of how strong their vision of the goal must be--to be working hard right now and seeing more working hard for several years preparing for the Olympics that come only every four years. The courage and tenacity that they must have is unthinkable for most of us.
I have found also in business that getting ready is a huge chunk of what I do. I'm preparing for success by thinking, studying, expanding, fine tuning, researching, communicating, and much more. In the beginning it was just me, but now there is a team and that increases all of these things, yet allows for even more possibilities because one person is limited. So, now we are preparing for even more success.
Now, sometimes we might think of getting ready as the four letter word, work. I suppose it is, but when there is this big goal in front of us, the work flows easily and as a matter of course. Keeping that big goal in mind is key to having the energy to continue to drive forward. Other than this one fact, the goal is pretty much not important--it is the journey toward it and the preparation for reaching it that is important. It is important because it is life in the moment. Therefore, I think that getting ready is the best part of the game.
Now some of you might be thinking, as I have in the past, that one cannot spend their whole lives getting ready, like a professional college student getting one degree after another, or a builder who continually brings materials to the building site, but never builds anything. You're right on that. It would be a waste of talent. The key is to live while preparing; to do while thinking--or, an easy way to say it is to try.
Just like the athlete, we think, plan, and execute. If it works, we do more of it, and if it doesn't work out so well, we erase it and begin again with more information from that feedback. In business it is the same. We think, plan, and execute. If it works, we expand it, grow it, advertise it. If it doesn't work so well, we rethink it, adjust it, reformulate it, pull it from the shelf, or maybe even discard it, and move on to more things that work. It's all part of getting ready. It's all good and it is the growth that we live in the moment with that is the thing we enjoy the most and that makes getting ready the best part of the game. |
