 My Life and Work

An Autobiography
of Henry Ford

by Henry Ford

My comments:

I have an abridged audio book of this book and have enjoyed listening to it many times. In fact, in my eBay store, I have sold many of this title all over the world. Recently, I've purchased the book and have enjoyed it unabridged and have enjoyed sharing it anew.

Of all the business leaders of the past that I have studied, Henry Ford is one of the more interesting. His story is not only fascinating because he was a key leader at the beginning of a vast industry, but even more interesting in his business philosophy which is what made him so successful in the first place, and was so different than those in the same field around him.

This book was his first of three and this one was published in 1922 and during the heyday of the world famous and most replicated, Model T.

In this book, Henry Ford not only tells the story of how he got into automobile manufacturing, but discusses his business ideas and methods, including quality materials and production, managing men and machines, wages, money and goods, cutting costs, transportation of goods, along with some general topics.

Of all the subjects Henry Ford highlights, it is his philosophy of service that is his focus. It is from this one point that I think this title is worth reading again today because these ideas are timeless. In addition, there is much to learn from the rest of the book that can easily be applied today. Included in that would be his philosophy on money and borrowing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in business.

(See below for one of my favorite sections in the book about the Ford Motor Company Creed.)

Enjoy!

More From Henry Ford

The Creed of the Ford Motor Company Under Henry Ford

One of the best books I have ever read about business was originally published in 1922 and yet it is as viable and important today as it ever was--and I expect that it will be thus far into the future.

Today, I would like to share what Henry Ford called The Creed of the Ford Motor Company. You could think of it like a mission statement (although I laugh at most of those. . .), but it is so much more real and stronger than that. It was the guiding basis of how Henry Ford thought about business and in particular how he felt about being in business as the Ford Motor Company.

Here is the quote from his book, My Life and Work by Henry Ford:

"The principal part of a chisel is the cutting edge. If there is a single principle on which our business rests it is that. It makes no difference how finely made a chisel is or what splendid steel it has in it or how well it is forged--if it has no cutting edge it is not a chisel. It is just a piece of metal. All of which being translated means that it is what a thing does--not what it is supposed to do--that matters. What is the use of putting a tremendous force behind a blunt chisel if a light blow on a sharp chisel will do the work? The chisel is there to cut, not be be hammered. The hammering is only incidental to the job. So if we want to work why not concentrate on the work and do it in the quickest possible fashion? The cutting edge of merchandising is the point where the product touches the consumer. An unsatisfactory product is on that has a dull cutting edge. A lot of waste effort is needed to put it through. The cutting edge of a factory is the man and the machine on the job. If the man is not right the machine cannot be; if the machine is not right the man cannot be. For any one to be required to use more force than is absolutely necessary for the job in hand is waste.

The essence of my idea then is that waste and greed block the delivery of true service. Both waste and greed are unnecessary. Waste is due largely to not understanding what one does, or being careless in doing of it. Greed is merely a species of nearsightedness. I have striven toward manufacturing with a minimum of waste, bot of materials and of human effort, and then toward distribution at a minimum of profit, depending for the total profit upon the volume of distribution. In the process of manufacturing I want to distribute the maximum of wage--that is, the maximum of buying power. Since also this makes for a minimum cost and we sell at a minimum profit, we can distribute a product in consonance with buying power. Thus everyone who is connected with us--either as a manager, worker, or purchaser--is the better for our existence. The institution that we have erected is performing a service. That is the only reason I have for talking about it. The principles of that service are these:

1. An absence of fear of the future and a veneration for the past. One who fears the future, who fears failure, limits his activities. Failure is only the opportunity more intelligently to begin again. There is no disgrace in honest failure; there is disgrace in fearing to fail. What is past is useful only as it suggests ways and means for progress.

2. A disregard for competition. Whoever does a thing best ought to be the one to do it. It is criminal to try to get business away from another man--criminal because on is then trying to lower for personal gain the condition of one's fellow man--to rule by force instead of by intelligence.

3. The putting of service before profit. Without a profit, business cannot extend. There is nothing inherently wrong about making a profit. Well-conducted business enterprise cannot fail to return a profit, but profit must and inevitably will come as a reward for good service. It cannot be the basis--it must be the result of service.

4. Manufacturing is not buying low and selling high. It is the process of buying materials fairly and, with the smallest possible addition of cost, transforming those materials into a consumable product and giving it to the consumer. Gambling, speculating, and sharp dealing, then only to clog this progression."

Sweet Transit Connect Sold by Fritts Ford

Fritts Ford of Riverside, CA shared this delightful Ford Transit Connect they had built for Casey's Cupcakes & Cappuccinos, also of Riverside, CA. Notice the helpful slide-out shelving in the rear to make this one super fine, and radical attention-getting delivery vehicle.

The Transit Connect has turned out to be an excellent move for Ford to sell in the United States. This vehicle has been available in other parts of the world for some time, but with America always looking for larger and more powerful, the Transit Connect with super fuel economy, compact size and cute figure, has cuddled its way into the hearts and minds of American business. Bravo to Ford for the boldness of thought to bring this great addition to market.

And thanks to Fritts Ford Fleet Department for showing this off and Casey's Cupcakes for the delightful coloring and graphics. One of the great things I've noticed about Transit Connect owners is that they like to make their Transit Connect's bold and fully personalized.

Let Fritts Ford Fleet guide you to your next business vehicle. See them at http://www.frittsfleet.com/. You can also see much more about Casey's Cupcakes at http://www.caseycupcake.com/. Their website is equally delightful.

GM and Bright Automotive Team Up!

Detroit, MI and Anderson, IN -- Bright Automotive and General Motors Co. announced Tuesday they have agreed to pursue a strategic relationship and that GM has provided funding to the Indiana automaker, the first funding action by the newly formed General Motors Ventures LLC.

The funding will help accelerate Bright's production of the IDEA, a revolutionary plug-in hybrid commercial vehicle.

"This relationship is an important step forward for Bright, and a strong endorsement of our highly experienced automotive team and our incredible vehicle," said Reuben Munger, Bright Automotive Chairman and CEO. "With this deal, Bright gets financial support that puts us on the fast track toward mass production of the IDEA. And perhaps just as importantly, we gain a strategic partner that is a world leader in electrification."

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding in July. GM Ventures provided funding to Bright this week, and the two companies intend to complete the formal agreements later this year. Upon completion of the agreements and other terms, General Motors Ventures would have a minority stake in Bright Automotive and Bright would have access to GM technologies, and advanced engine and transmission systems, for its vehicle.

"Funding early-stage start-up companies is a new way of doing business at GM to accelerate the introduction of innovative technology to support our core automotive business and give us a competitive advantage," said Jon Lauckner, president of GM Ventures. "In this case, our funding of Bright Automotive will accelerate the introduction of advanced propulsion and light-weight technologies in the commercial vehicle market."

"We talked with several leading automakers, but GM clearly had the right vision, the most capable technology, and the closest alignment with our business approach," said Michael Brylawski, Bright Automotive executive vice president. "We are thrilled to work with GM to create American jobs, stimulate technology development, and build an innovative American vehicle that will help reduce oil dependence and cut costs for businesses."

In developing the IDEA, Bright started with a clean sheet of paper, listened to customers, and took a novel approach to product development that focused on light-weighting, aerodynamics and a highly efficient drivetrain. The result is a multipurpose vehicle for business fleets - the first designed to be highly efficient and provide a clear economic benefit.

The IDEA delivers a positive total cost of ownership to fleet customers by providing significantly greater fuel efficiency than current fleet vehicles in its class. The IDEA operates in electric mode for 40 miles before switching to an estimated 36-mpg hybrid mode for 100+ mpg potential based on daily driving behavior.

Funding through GM Ventures will allow Bright to begin ramping up the development of the production program for the IDEA in the third quarter of 2010. Bright continues to seek a low-interest loan through the Department of Energy's ATVM program. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Navistar eStar All-Electric Truck

ONE YEAR LATER, NAVISTAR'S ESTAR™ ALL-ELECTRIC TRUCK POISED TO MAKE CLEAN, ENERGY-EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION A REALITY

  • eStar™, the First Purpose-Built All-Electric Truck Established in Several Key Markets
  • Environmentally Focused Fleets Take Delivery
  • Sales, Service and Support Network Continues to Grow
  • Leasing Opportunities Provide Fleets with Flexible Financing Options

WARRENVILLE, ILL. - (Aug. 5, 2010) - Last August, President Obama traveled to Navistar's manufacturing facility in Wakarusa, Ind. to announce a $39.2 million grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and administered by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop and deploy electric trucks. One year later, Navistar's eStar™ all-electric truck is coming off the production line and making its way into some of the nation's most environmentally focused fleets.

All-Electric Buzz

Following a production kick-off at the Wakarusa plant in May and introductory launch events in Portland, Ore., and Sacramento, Calif., in May and June, the eStar all-electric truck is generating significant interest in the marketplace.

"In just the last two months, we've seen a number of customers-large and small-express interest in the eStar all-electric truck," said Mark Aubry, eStar's vice president, sales and marketing. "We've delivered eStar trucks to FedEx and Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and with vehicle orders in the pipeline, we continue to work toward our goal of building 400 units this year."

TriVan Truck Body - Mobile Command Center

Video Link:

Text from YouTube post: "This is a Mobile Command Center for King County Sheriff's Department that was built at TriVan Truck Body in Ferndale, WA. TriVan builds Specialty Vehicles of all sorts, including Mobile Command Centers, SWAT Trucks, Bomb Squad Vehicles, Hazmat Trucks, etc. Each vehicle is custom designed and built at our 40,000 foot facility. All bodies are built out of an extruded aluminum panel that is .100" thick, and features an integrated rib every 12". This affords great flexibility in design and application. We've sent our vehicles around the world, and if you're considering building a Specialty Vehicle, please contact us!"

I've been looking around YouTube for some good commercial truck videos. There aren't very many compared to how many there are with people falling down, or being arrested, or just acting the fool. Seems to me like it would be a really good thing to have a lot of these.

Anyway. . . I found this one and some 20 videos put up by TriVan Truck Body. (Here's a link to their YouTube site: www.youtube.com/user/cason234. I especially loved this one on a sweet rig built last year for King County Sheriff's Department in Washington. I love the truck sure enough and loved the specialty features too, but what I liked most was the wonderful, detailed narration presenting all of the features of this great body in a nice, calm, yet enthusiastic way. There seemed to be just a bit of pride for the job well done by the company. I loved how he pointed out each feature and explained some in great detail such as the electrical control system.

This video is one of several on this same truck, and I've watched the others too and they are good as well. This one stood out and I have high praise for getting these done, showing off their great work, and getting out there. Check out their website too: www.trivan.net.

Thanks TriVan! Keep sharing.

  Pace Edwards Utility Bedlocker Tonneau
Video Link:

This video shows how to operate the utility bedlocker tonneau cover for service body truck beds from Pace Edwards. This may be a great solution for many instead of a cargo bed enclosure because it is lighter and it opens all the way, whereas a cargo bed enclosure usually opens 50 to 66% of the bed area only. The bedlocker tonneau cover also can be stopped at any point between open and closed and it is totally convenient since it operates electrically. It would also be a great solution for those with fifth wheel trailers to tow. Great idea. See the full line of products at http://www.pace-edwards.com/, or call them at 888-231-2686.

  World's First Double-Clutch Transmisson

  • Fuso is the first manufacturer worldwide to present a double-clutch transmission in commercial vehicles
  • Known as the "Duonic", this double-clutch transmission combines automated driving with the advantages of a manual transmission
Stuttgart/Kawasaki - As with a fully automatic transmission it is a two-pedal system, there is an accelerator pedal, a brake pedal and a selector lever. The selector lever allows automatic or manual gearshift mode to be selected.
The M038S6 "Duonic transmission" has six forward gears and a reverse gear. The P-function ensures safe parking by preventing the vehicle from rolling away. "Duonic" features a non-wearing wet clutch, which lowers maintenance costs by eliminating the need to replace worn clutch discs. A creep function has been added to the wet clutch, as is usual for automatic transmission with a torque converter. This enables the vehicle's speed to be easily controlled when moving slowly - for example when manoeuvring or in stop-and-go traffic - and hill-starts are also made easier.

The new transmission drives like an automatic transmission, but unlike a fully automatic torque converter transmission, it makes for lower consumption figures and therefore lower exhaust emissions. See more about Mitsubishi Fuso Trucks at http://www.mitfuso.com/

Isuzu Caters To Reynolds For Last 7 Years

Seven years after the first Isuzu joined the all-refrigerated fleet at Reynolds in 2003, the company now runs almost 70 Isuzu trucks. Following the recent arrival of a further 31 new Isuzu Forward 7.5t rigids, the Waltham Abbey based catering company now predominantly specifies Isuzu for all their 7.5t distribution truck requirements.

45% of the 164 strong Reynolds vehicle fleet runs at 7.5 tonnes GVW and as Commercial Director Paul Collins says, "Originally we were attracted by the Isuzu's payload potential for our intensive multi-drop distribution routes. Over the years though, the Isuzu's have given us additional benefits, as they have proved to be extremely reliable and they offer really low operational running costs, all of which is backed by a superb working relationship between the two companies."

The latest 31 Isuzu Forward N75.190 rigids have been specified with the popular Easyshift transmission, which is proving to be ideal for the Reynolds stop/start delivery journeys. The trucks are also all fitted with the latest single compartment Solomon's refrigerated bodies which feature Carrier Transicold Xarios 600 direct drive refrigeration systems.

Working out of the five Reynolds distribution depots nationwide and with an estimated working life of between 5 and 7 years, the Isuzu's are worked hard on intensive daily delivery routes involving between 25 and 30 drops per truck journey.

Established over 60 years ago and still a family business, Reynolds has grown to become one of the UK's leading independent distributors of fresh produce and ambient goods to the foodservice market. Reynolds now has strategically located depots in Scotland, Leicester, Manchester and Bristol as well as its national distribution centre and head office at Waltham Cross.

"The success of the 7.5t Isuzu's at Reynolds is testament to the strength of the relationship between the two companies. Intensive multi-drop food distribution is a challenge for any vehicle and the Isuzus have proven to be consistently good performers and up to the job over the years. We have worked closely with Reynolds now for seven years to ensure that our vehicles provide them with unquestionable reliability and good service, day in, day out," said Keith Child, Marketing Director, Isuzu Truck UK.

Full details of the 2010 Isuzu Truck product range can be viewed and downloaded from the company's website http://www.isuzutruck.co.uk/

Isuzu FRR 500 - Jack Of All Trades

A fleet of six new medium duty Isuzu FRR 500 trucks is helping to ensure clear drains, crack-free footpaths and healthy trees remain a charming feature of the historic City of Port Adelaide Enfield.

City of Port Adelaide Enfield Council Fleet Manager, Jim Bower, has confirmed that the three FRR 500 chipper trucks, two FRR 500 concrete tray trucks and an FRR 500 tipper with crane are now in action and hard at work throughout the city.

The three chipper trucks have been fitted out with a canopy body to catch the remains of tree limbs, which are shredded by Council's parks and gardens staff.

Jim says the FRR 500 tipper with crane tows a three-ton vacuum unit and is primarily used in drainage maintenance across the city.

"The crane is powered by the truck's PTO and is used to lift drain lids in the stormwater network so sumps can be cleared of leaf matter and debris that wash down and cause blockages," Jim said.

According to Jim, the long, flat trays fitted to the FRR 500 concrete trucks make it easier for Council maintenance staff to perform their tasks. In turn, this improves occupational health and safety outcomes.

"The 'concreters' are being used for roadside curb and footpath repairs and the implementation of pram-access ramps, " Jim said.

"We do up to 200 of these ramps each year, improving the footpath environment, developing residential and commercial areas, and making repairs to existing infrastructure."

All six of the bodies fitted to the Council's new Isuzus were fabricated by North East Isuzu in Burton, about 20 kilometres north of Port Adelaide.

Jim said the dealership was tasked with specifying the trucks to include a range of storage and functional options.

"North East Isuzu were 100 per cent - we've never had an issue with them," Jim said. "Their attitude has been 'if the customer has a request, we'll accommodate it."

The rigorous procurement process in local government means a number of factors come into play when making purchasing decisions.

According to Jim, price is just one factor considered in this process, with other variables including serviceability, fuel efficiency and emissions, occupational health and safety, commonality within the fleet and an operator assessment. The latter can often be the most telling.

"When the operator does an assessment it's usually about creature comfort and the Isuzu cabins are very well appointed," Jim said.

From the heated exterior mirrors to the quality Isri 6860 seat, driver airbag, car-like handling and optional multi information display unit with satellite navigation, the Isuzu FRR 500s remain at the forefront of cabin refinement in the Australian truck market.

The versatile FRR 500s also pack plenty of power with154 kW at 2,600 rpm and 637 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,600 rpm.

A Little Scratching Can Be Good

"Business is never so healthy as when, like a chicken, it must do a certain amount of scratching around for what it gets."

-- Henry Ford

Ah. . . in our personal lives and in our businesses, we dream of the luxury and everything taken care of, plenty of time away, profits off the chart, cash flow like a rapid river--in other words, ease. Smooth and easy, that's what we want. And what do we get instead of that? We get challenges, cash flow issues, accounting tantrums, customer fatigue, a motley crew, and. . . well, that's just some of it, isn't it? Certainly not all at once, or we would quit and say heck with it. Yet, just enough to keep us off balance and hungry for our day of ease somewhere out there.

I get it and I can totally relate to it and even admit, that yes, I do look forward to the ease sometime in the future--sooner than later I hope. At the same time, I have been learning a valuable lesson. Though I've been through many challenges in my life, financially and others, I am only now recognizing the value of, as Henry Ford says, "scratching around for what it gets."

You may never know exactly how a great idea, or a number of good ideas, really change things for you and your life and your business. They can and do. This we know. What is interesting is that so many of the great ideas and even the good ideas come from scratching around as a result of challenge and adversity. I am beginning to get excited about that concept rather than avoid it, and it is making a big difference in me, and my business.

I've studied business and business leaders for a long time now. I've read a few hundred books on business leaders and businesses such as Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Conrad Hilton, Alfred Sloan, Andrew Carnegie, Juan Trippe, Piper, Boeing, Polaroid, and the list goes on and on. Out of each, I have received wise counsel and have heard stories of such courage and tenacity. I've read and heard of almost losing everything several times, then massive success, others were successful from day one because they chose to satisfy a great need effectively and efficiently. In almost all of them, they faced challenge and adversity and every one of them came through all the better for it--not only in themselves, but a stronger and better company as well.

I am suggesting, as I have begun to do, that we look at challenge and adversity with joy instead of fear. That we get excited instead of disappointed. And, that we learn to enjoy scratching around. I know that will change everything for us, as well as those on whom we have an effect. That would also include our clients and customers.

Overloading trucks began pretty much with the advent of the truck
and it continues to this day all over the world.

It's just a little sand and a few bags of cement. . .
