My comments:

A Classic!

This book has been out since 1997 and I still love reading it again. It is such a power-house of financial knowledge and expertise. The first time I read it I was amazed and the 10th time I read it, I was amazed. It is an excellent book with simple, yet effective wisdom.

Enjoy!

#1 Sales Attribute

"People who ask confidently get more than those who are hesitant and uncertain. When you've figured out what you want to ask for, do it with certainty, boldness and confidence."

-- Jack Canfield

"People don't buy for logical reasons. They buy for emotional reasons."

-- Zig Ziglar

Having spent over 38 years in the sales game, most of it as a sales manager, I can say without the slightest hesitancy that the number one asset of a very good sales person is summed up in one single word: confidence.

Strangely enough, it is not an inborn skill, but a learned one, and the strange part is that so few really learn it, and it is something that every single sales person needs.

The other thing I learned about this from all these years is that the method to achieve confidence can be summed up in one word: boldness. If one has a degree of boldness, one will try things that others shy away from. Boldness, then will create the trial and error, and the results of the trial and error will create the confidence.

It doesn't require any more intelligence than good common sense would dictate, what being good at sales requires is desire, a willingness to put yourself out there, learn from trying and doing and failing and succeeding, and improving to the point of being confident in ones ability to succeed.

That's as simple as it gets.

All the rest is sharpening the saw and lubricating the parts.

Confidence Is The Result Of A Trial And Success Game.

Put yourself out there today. Get some trial and success play going. It'll do you good!

The C-Word

Regardless of whether you're in business for yourself, working for someone, or even in your personal life, I would like to make one recommendation: Forget about what other people are doing and concentrate on you and what you do.

In business, I'm sick of the 'C' word, competition. I think that any company that is focused on their competition is focusing on failure. Being concerned about the competition and what they do or do not do will not serve a growth-oriented business, but, instead, it must take them off course by the very nature of that focus on the so called competition.

Who cares what 'their' prices are, their features are, their incentives are, or their policies are. What really matters is what yours are. What really matters is you focusing on your clients and serving their needs and desires exclusively. What matters is, as Anthony Robbins teaches, CANi-Constant and Never-Ending Improvement. What matters is innovation. What matters is growth-not only the company, but everyone that touches the company. What matters is your own success, not the guy down the street.

I've worked for or been around car dealers most of my life and a typical Chevy dealer will say his number one competition is the Chevy dealers in his area. The typical Ford dealer will say her number one competition is the Ford dealers in their area. You might have thought that the Ford store would be concerned about the Chevy store, but that is not the case. They worry about their sales being undercut by other people selling the same product.

As a sales manager for over 35 years, I hear whining from sales people about another sales person getting their customer. I would always respond that if they didn't ask for you, they weren't your customer, even if they bought from you in the past. That same philosophy applies to the entire dealership. If they aren't buying from you, they aren't your customer. There is nothing to lose, because you don't have it to lose. You allowed someone else to have it based on how you serve, or perhaps, don't serve your customers. This applies to everyone in a store from the lowest rank to the owner, to the manufacturer.

Whatever your position, ask yourself, what are you doing to wow your customers and potential customers? What are you doing to improve services? What are you doing to make it easier for customers to buy from you? What are you doing to innovate? What are you doing to improve your operation? What are you doing to be of more service? What are you doing that might matter to a customer? And, conversely, take a quick look at what you're not doing and what you might stop doing that could lead to greater success.

People who are leading are not concerned about what everyone else is doing. Companies that are leading are not concerned about what every other company is doing. Sales people who are leading are not concerned about any other sales people, or their customer base. Leaders are leading. Others may follow or not. That isn't the concern. Leaders are leading and that makes ALL the difference.

Deadlines Are Overrated

"Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion."

-- C Northcote Parkinson

Ain't it the truth! You know, I am sure that procrastination must rely on this truth, for without it, there would be no time left to procrastinate.

Think about it. We put off decisions (work) by having loads of time available. If we shorten the available time, the decision would have to be made. Why should it take three weeks to decide on something that you know in your heart is already decided, yet just wanting to make sure it is the right decision fills the time. So many times the decision inside is done in a very short time frame. We know what we like, don't like and what works and doesn't work for us. Moving forward makes perfect sense, but we still have time left on the meter and we do want to make sure of. . . .something. It can't be this easy, can it?

I've been taught that super successful people are quick to decide and very slow to change their mind. How else could someone manage a large corporation, or other such project. Decision making becomes an art and it is something practiced daily on many levels. They must set arbitrary deadlines for the decision, so they can just get on with the workload. Makes perfect sense.

Here's to paying attention to the time we give ourselves to get things done, or to decide to get things done. It might make a major difference in our lives.

Sweet Interlift "Mini Fix" Van Liftgate

Here's a 2010 Sprinter 2500, Hi-Roof Series Van with a great design liftgate. This is a nice setup for getting those big, bulky or heavy things into the van. It is the Interlift Mini Fix Liftgate with up to 1,100 lbs capacity and a huge, yet manageable extruded aluminum platform that is 62" x 55" in size. This job also included installing E-Track inside the van to help contain and manage the cargo and keep it out of the drivers seat.

Our thanks to Kris Cushing at North Bay Truck Body for the great shots! Much appreciated. See more of North Bay Truck Body's specialties at www.nbtb.com.

Sweet Unique Featured Crane Body

I've seen a lot of crane bodies, but this one is unique. It's not the crane; although it is a nice Venturo 6,000 lb crane. It's not the body, although it is a great looking body. And, of course this truck body has lots of bells and whistles including E-track, vise, additional upper box streetside and a lot more.  Those are all nice, but it isn't any of those things that caught my eye.

What caught my eye and my attention is the liftgate mount on the bumper extension aft of the outriggers--and it wasn't even that as much as the "tailgate," or in this case, we might call it a load divider. First, it is made out of diamond plate steel, second it is mounted on hinges to lay down and create a ramp for cargo to be offloaded from the liftgate into the truck which is at a higher location. I think it is ingenious. Pretty interesting in the photo with the tailgate down, don't you think? It's a first for me, that's for sure.

This unit was put together by Jack Schmidt at West Coast Truck Equipment, Inc in West Sacramento, CA. He loves to do custom work and does a great deal of it. You can see more of Jack's work at his website at http://www.westcoastruckequipment.com/, or call him at 916.376.0690.

Sheriff Search and Rescue Truck by Harbor

Kimberly at Harbor Truck Bodies sent us this sweet body for West Valley Search and Rescue of the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.

The truck is a crew cab single rear wheel Chevy and the body is an 8' version of Harbor's Highliner Body with horizontal series compartments on the streetside and vertical compartments on the curbside. It also has an LED lighting package. There's lots of room for keeping things secure and out of sight including the huge enclosed area with the barn style doors. Notice the high mounted stop light.

Our thanks also to Tony Anderson of Harbor for being the model in the second shot. See more interesting truck bodies that Harbor makes at www.htbi.net

Nectar Raises A Glass To Bevan Bodies

Drinks distribution specialist Nectar has treated itself to an early 25th birthday present in the shape of a pair of 7.5-tonne trucks with the first fast access curtain slider bodies to be built by the Bevan Group.

The new arrivals are now delivering imported premium beers, wines and other alcoholic and soft drinks, to customers across the south of England.

Mounted in this case on Isuzu chassis, Bevan's bodies feature curtains which are tensioned from front to back, rather than top to bottom as on a conventional curtainsider.

With locks at both ends and no time-consuming straps and buckles to contend with, drivers can slide back the curtains, concertina-fashion, in seconds, to gain access to the load. This configuration is ideally suited, therefore, to multi-drop applications.

And because Bevan's body is built around an alloy frame with aluminium side raves and other components, it is also extremely
light, an attribute that translates into highly competitive payloads.

Still family-owned, Wiltshire-based Nectar next year celebrates its 25th anniversary. The firm's decision to invest in the two new vehicles, both of which represent extensions to its fleet, reflects soaring demand for its products.

Nectar now operates nine trucks, all of them 7.5-tonners. Working from the company's headquarters in Zeals, near Wincanton, they deliver to up market hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, as well as private individuals.

Managing Director Fiona Jukes explains: "We can't run bigger trucks because we need them to be sufficiently compact and manoeuvrable to reach our customers' premises.

"When you're transporting barrels of beer and cases of wine it's always going to be weight rather than volume that is the constraining factor. So we're delighted that, even with a driver on board, the lightweight bodies on our latest vehicles mean we have still achieved a very productive payload capacity of 3,950kg.

"And as our drivers can make as many as 25 deliveries a day, they greatly appreciate being able to get into their vehicles' load areas so quickly and easily."

The fast access curtain slider, which also features anti-vandal reinforced 'pockets' within the curtains, is the latest addition to the fast-growing Bevan Group's comprehensive range of dry freight box and curtainside bodies for rigid trucks and vans. With production facilities in Halesowen and Oldbury, West Midlands, Bevan recently became the UK's first commercial vehicle bodybuilder to be granted European Community Type Approval Status, more than five years ahead of the mandatory deadline.

  Mahindra Gio Compact 1/2-Ton Pickup

Presenting India's first compact truck. A truck that's built to save for you. It gives an unmatched mileage of 27 kmpl and scores really low on maintenance. Its 0.5 ton, compact truck box ensures maximum space is utilised in intra city operations. All this, and a range of other features, comes at a price for which you won't have to spend your life's entire savings.

In fact, the Gio was destined to be a leader even before it was launched. After all it boasts of an impressive lineage, since Mahindra is the biggest player in the small commercial vehicle segment, where combined sales of its pick-ups and 3 wheelers cross 7000 vehicles every month. And hallmarks of all these vehicles include their rugged build, low operating costs and powerful yet fuel efficient engines.

GVW is 1110 kg or 2,493 lbs with a curb weight of 610 kg, or 1,370 lbs, which gives this truck a 500 kg, or 1,123 lb cargo capacity including driver and passenger. It comes with a single-cylinder 441 cc diesel motor with 4sp manual transmission. The tires are 8-ply rated 4.50-10lt.

Elgas Uses Isuzu For LPG Deliveries

Elgas' Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker fleet is the largest in Australia, transporting LPG to homes and business' across Australia and New Zealand. And it just got bigger with 10 new Isuzu tankers.

Established in 1984, Elgas is Australia's principal marketer and supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). With one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest LPG storage facilities - 'The Cavern' - at Port Botany in Sydney, Elgas supplies LPG for home, business, industrial, transport and outdoor use through its distribution network of 49 sites around Australia and nine in New Zealand.

Joining Australia's largest dedicated LPG tanker fleet are 10 new Isuzu tankers with a Gross Combination Mass (GCM) of 32 tonnes. The Isuzu FVD 1000 and FVR 1000 trucks were purchased due to their performance, reliability and efficient maintenance costs, according to Elgas National Fleet Operations Manager, Damian Pennington.

"Elgas' metropolitan delivery fleet is required to travel around 55,000 kilometres a year and have engine hours in excess of 2,100 hours per annum," Mr Pennington said.

"We have had a very positive experience with Isuzu in terms of reliability and ease of maintenance in the past, hence our decision to upgrade with the same brand of trucks."

According to Mr Pennington, another defining feature of Isuzu trucks is their advanced engine technology.

"When we specify trucks into tanker applications, we require the truck to have a full electronic engine which interfaces with our Program Logic Control System (PLCS)," Mr Pennington said.

"A key decision in choosing Isuzu was the SiTEC Series II engine's compatibility with the PLCS. The PLCS also enables Elgas to maintain a high level of safety compliance. The logic program electrically controls valve timing and sequencing as well as the safety shutdown system, minimising manual intervention."

Specified for high density and high frequency local distribution routes, the Isuzu SiTEC Series II 295 engine has ample amounts of power (221 kW) and torque (981 Nm) to tackle both highway and congested city conditions, according to Mr Pennington.

"Isuzu's SiTEC Series II engine has a very good operational profile fit for Elgas' city delivery operations," Mr Pennington said.

"The trucks have plenty of torque to run the power take off unit; this is available low in the rev range which is good in stop-start city conditions.

"Performance is further enhanced by the easy-to-use Allison transmission, which relieves the stress of gear changes, enabling our trucks to be safely and confidently driven by operators of varying truck driving experience.

"We want our drivers to keep two hands on the steering wheel at all times," Mr Pennington added.

Complementing Elgas' high safety standards is Isuzu's ergonomically designed cabin which includes safety features such as Front Underrun Protection Device (FUPD), ECE-R29 cab strength compliance and driver airbag.

The trucks' cab-over design and cabin layout have received many positive comments by both operators and management, according to Mr Pennington.

"Isuzu is probably the best manufacturer on the market for forward vision in a cab-over design," Mr Pennington said.

"Coupled with a very quiet cabin, a practical layout and Isri 6860 air suspension seat, the FVD and FVR 1000s are very user-friendly and comfortable trucks to operate."
