Failing Forward

Turning Mistakes Into Stepping Stones For Success

by John C Maxwell

From the inside cover of the book:

"It seems that some people are born to achieve anything they want. Some would say they are lucky, are blessed, or have the Midas touch. But what truly is the reason for their success? Family background, wealth, greater opportunities, high morals, and easy childhood? New York Times best-selling author John C Maxwell has the answer:

The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure.

Maxwell says that if you are like him, you were never prepared to deal with failure. Coming out of school, he feared it, misunderstood it, and ran away from it. But he's learned to make failure his friend, and he can teach you to do the same.

With Maxwell's trademark warmth and humor, he teaches straightforward principles for overcoming failure and gives fifteen solid steps to help you become the kind of achiever you've always wanted to be.

'I want to help you learn how to confidently look the prospect of failure in the eye and mvoe forward anyway,' says Maxwell. 'Because in life, the question is not if you will have problems, but how you are going to deal with them. Stop failing backward and start Failing Forward.

---------------

I read this book when it first came out in 2000 and just reread it again last week. What a powerful book this is and I just had to put this one in the Knoledge Cafe this issue.

It is full of powerful stories of examples of failures that became so successful that they are flat inspiring! It really helps you take a whole new appreciation of the act of failing! It doesn't sound like the word failing should be in that sentence, but this book will really help you feel that way.

Sometimes we look too closely at things and label them incorrectly as a result. Failure doesn't mean broken, destroyed, catastrophic, it is a result. It is our labeling that calls it failure.

I always remember that Edison failed 10,000 times to make the electric light bulb, but he didn't think it was failing, but experimenting and small steps toward success.

John C Maxwell has a great way of describing a better way of looking at life in general and failure in particular.

Stratec Locks!
 Stratec Lock
Recently, Strattec sent me 3 locks to try, one for GM, Ford and Dodge. I have to tell you that this is one sweet lock. The lock "codes" itself. You just take your ignition key, put it into the lock, turn it and unlock the lock. Now the lock is "coded" to that key only. Try another key and it doesn't work. It is just that easy.

Whether you use padlocks on your vehicle or storage facility or around your home, now you can have all the lock keyed to the ignition key of your GM, Ford or Dodge. You have got to try one of these locks to believe it. They aren't cheap, but they are heavy duty and they are an excellent value in my opinion. Try one and I know you will want more.

Danger2

Danger! Danger! Could Cause Serious Injury or Death! Read these instructions prior to assembly.

Please check the box, "I have read and understand the implications of my ignoring of the hazardous situation that I am involved in when I operate machinery, especially machinery that I have not had any experience with and that in the event of probably misfortune of serious injury or death, no one who made this equipment or the signs or the distributor or the installer or the lot boy or anyone else that was not you. Heretofore I accept all responsibility for my own actions and inaction's and thought of actions or inaction's of any attempts to operate this machinery that nameless parties manufactured without my knowledge or expertise. I agree to hold the parties who are purported to be the manufacturers and all their associated parties such as distributors and dealers and upfitters and mechanics and all other personnel that may have been involved in this production blameless and faultless of anything and everything that ever was or ever will be as a result of my use of this thing."

Really. This is an entirely too serious world. Like someone would actually read all these signs. Like it makes a difference. Very funny stuff.

Bodies On The Ground Can Be A Problem

 Body on ground1
Bodies on ground2

Taking bodies and other pieces like the tuckaway liftgate shown above off of trucks to sell the chassis can be a huge problem or a solution. It just depends on how it is done and why and when it gets back on a truck. I've seen a lot of this kind of thing and what happens some of the time is that the body cost is credited to the chassis at full price when there will be future labor costs to remount it and even more important, in refurbishing it to make it ready for a new truck.

The body cost should be reduced accordingly so that the a false gross profit is not recorded and an increased inventory value given. How long it sits on the ground is another factor. The longer it sits, the more reconditioning will be needed, and the easier it is to forget about it.

It can also be a solution. One of the best things about commercial trucks I think is that the bodies are removable. Now, I would rather not move them around, but if it makes sense and the need is there, I will do it without any further hesitation. I prefer to swap one with another so it doesn't land on the ground, but if it must be on the ground for a time, so be it. Just keep track, make sure the value is proper and plan to get it off the ground as soon as possible.

The Expandable Length Snowplow

The Expandable Length Snowplow!

Here is a very unique product: The XLS from Fisher Engineering. The XLS offers a wide variety of blade configurations and positions not offered by either a straight blade or a V-blade.

The blade can be operated as an 8 foot straight blade or extended up to 10 feet as required for the job at hand. It can also operate with both wings scooped, or positioned for windrowing with one wing scooped. All of these positions are shown in the diagram below:
Fisher2
Fisher 3

The scoop position is a big advantage as it will carry more snow forward, as a bucket loader would. When windrowing, the leading edge blade wing can be directed ahead and the trailing wing can be retracted to minimize snow trailings.

As with all Fisher trip edge design, only the edge trips when encountering an obstacle, the blade remains upright, keeping the snow ahead of the blade, not under the truck!
