It turns what we have into enough, and more.

Leadership
Is An Art

by Max DePree

From the back cover of the book:

"This is a wonderful book. It captures Max's spirit--and he's a truly exceptional person. But it also says more about leadership in clearer, more elegant, and more convincing language than many of the much longer books that have been published on the subject." - Peter F Drucker

"Leaders owe a covenant to the corporation or institution, which is, after all, a group of people. Leaders owe the organization a new reference point for what caring, purposeful, committed people can be in the institutional setting. Notice I did not say what people can do--what we can do is merely a consequence of what we can be. Corporations, like the people who compose them, are always in a state of becoming. Covenants bind people together and enable them to meet their corporate needs by meeting the needs of one another." -- From Leadership Is An Art.

Max DePree is chairman of the board of directors of Herman Miller, Inc., the primary innovator in the furniture business for sixty years and regularly included among the top twenty-five firms on Fortune's list of the most admired companies in the United States.

I bought this book when it first came out in 1989 and was so enthralled by it that I bought a copy for every manager on the staff of the dealership I worked at, including the dealer. It is a very powerful book and I think it is a must-read for everyone who is now a manager and those who want to be a manager. I expect that you will be equally impressed.

Stratec Locks!
 Stratec Lock
Recently, Strattec sent me 3 locks to try, one for GM, Ford and Dodge. I have to tell you that this is one sweet lock. The lock "codes" itself. You just take your ignition key, put it into the lock, turn it and unlock the lock. Now the lock is "coded" to that key only. Try another key and it doesn't work. It is just that easy.

Whether you use padlocks on your vehicle or storage facility or around your home, now you can have all the lock keyed to the ignition key of your GM, Ford or Dodge. You have got to try one of these locks to believe it. They aren't cheap, but they are heavy duty and they are an excellent value in my opinion. Try one and I know you will want more.

Custom Body by The Fab Shop

Custom Body 5

This is an interesting Harbor service body by The Fab Shop in Edgewood, Washington. It was a custom order for their customer who does house remodels and a lot of custom cabinets.

The body is described by Eric Bakke of the Fab Shop: The truck body was designed around hauling lumber and carpentry tools, such as a table saw, chop saw, ladder and lots of bins for nails and various items. The overhead ladder rack was designed around lumber sizes. The huge front transverse compartment has a slide out tray that will accept 8' sheets of plywood for dry storage, or cabinets. The rear was left open for appliance or scrap hauling to and from the job. An electric cover was added to utilize this space in the winter months.

I have to say that this is one of the most interesting bodies I've seen. What a huge front transverse compartment! Looks like you could stand up and walk right through there. Notice also the E-track in the back. Of course it is mounted on a Mitsubishi Fuso. I didn't get the length of this, but it looks like a 14' body on a 120" CA. Those tall huge volume cabinets are awesome. Then, Eric says it has an electric cover for the bed area. That is interesting.

Thanks, Eric of The Fab Shop and Kimberly of Harbor for the photos and information. This is a great piece to show off.

Sleek Chipper Body by UTB

Sleek Chipper1

Sleek Chipper 2

This is probably the sleekest looking chipper body I've seen and I love the fact that it is mounted on an Isuzu chassis. What a great combination of capacity and maneuverability. This unit is produced by United Truck Bodies of Phoenix, Arizona.

This unit is part of a lineup of what UTB calls their Proscaper Dump. Here are some standard features:

  • 10 guage steel construction
  • 48" solid sides
  • Continuous welds from the floor to sides
  • 6" Structural channel longsills
  • 3" Structural channel crossmembers
  • Rear skirt with recessed lights
  • Full depth front and rear corner posts
  • No rear cross bar to hinder loading and unloading
  • Unmatched 5-year warranty
They also offer a wide range of options such as manual and electric tarp systems, special lighting, underbed boxes, and much more.

Stahl Challenger X with High Roof

Stahl Challenger X with High Roof

This is a very nice looking Stahl Challenger X with a high roof mounted on a conventional cab single rear wheel chassis. This particular photo was found on the site of Lancaster Truck Bodies, of Kennett Square, PA. I've seen many Challenger X units, but have never seen this with the high roof. Very nice.

The ChallengerX Service Body is an economical, rugged and dependable, utility service body that is the perfect solution for tool storage needs. Concealed door hinges with spring loaded door holders hold doors open at 90° for easier access. Automotive clip-on door seals protect your assets from the elements. The ChallengerX also takes advantage of an exclusive "Lock-Bolt" mechanical fastening system. This system reduces 80% of the welding used on conventional service bodies but is stronger and more consistent than traditional welding construction.

For more information on this and other truck bodies from Lancaster Truck Bodies, call them today at 800-732-0004. You can visit their website at www.lancastertruckbodies.com.
Adding Storage To Dump Bodies

Service Dump1

 Service dump 2

Here's a couple different ways of adding storage space for tools and other things to a dump body. One, is to take a service body and add a dump, and the other is to put a box in front of and under the dump. The service body has a good deal of storage, yet in smaller spaces and the storage box behind the cab has larger spaces and matter of fact, goes all the way through. They both achieve the same basic objective.

These two shots were provided by Cascade Truck Body in Eugene, Oregon. You can contact them at 541-342-5317 and you can visit their website at www.cascadetruckbody.com.
A Translucent Roof Makes A Difference

 Translucent Roof
What a difference a translucent roof makes. This photo was take in the shadow of the body and without a flash. One can see nicely from floor to ceiling. This particular van body is a 20' unit manufactured by Supreme Corporation.

Masterack Drop Down Ladder Rack

Great Gift Idea

Gift idea

This is a great gift idea for a dealership or body company.

Bill Stephenson of Ron DuPratt Ford of Dixon, CA, ordered some nice standard cups and filled them with some wrapped candies and had his wife help him wrap them in cellophane with a nice little ribbon. Certainly not a big expense, but tasty and it keeps your name around.

I got one from Bill as a sample about 4 years ago, and it is my favorite cup in the cupboard. Thanks Bill!
The Pickup and Van Body Marriage

Pickup Van

Here's an idea: take a pickup and make it a van body and then put a liftgate on it. Seems to work on this Dodge. Nice aluminum liftgate takes some of the weight off. Actually, it looks like this works pretty well.

This unit was put together by Stiles Truck Body & Equipment, Inc., in Turlock, CA. You can reach them at 209-667-2639. Visit their website at www.stilestruckbody.com.
