This book was published in 1977 and this new print in 2006. I read this when it first came out and was selling cars at that time. I got to be in the audience and see Joe Girard at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco filming his first set of training videos prior to this books release. It was fascinating.
Still a powerful book today and especially good since Joe Girard was a car salesmen and is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Greatest Salesman. It is a great read.
For just a little over $11, you can read this easy to read book and pick up some great information. See what Joe thought about a database. I've never forgotten it, or his rule of 250. It's a classic. Great stuff from a superstar salesman.

Great Dealer Websites |
This is a new spot in the IdeaLetter where we share great dealer commercial websites that we find or are sent to us. Since we also build websites for commercial dealers, we are always looking for those who stand out ahead in website thinking.
This time the spotlight is on two dealerships:
The first is a Chevy dealer in Southern California: Sierra Commercial Truck Center in Monrovia, California. Sean Kerr is the manager and also GSM. They move a serious number of commercial upfitted trucks and are located on the frontage road alongside a very busy 210 Freeway. Here are some of what we liked:
- Separate site from retail store
- Very clean layout without any distractions.
- Clear navigation menu
- Sale ads in specials tab
- Toll free number in header on every page along with address, email, phone and fax at the bottom of every page.
- Inventory search in box on the home page.
- BEST PART: Meet Our Staff page. This is the best website we have found with photos of the team. The people in the photos all have wonderful smiles and they just look like you want to know them. That is huge!! Great job!
- Contact numbers and email for each member.
The only thing we struggled with was the inventory search aspect of this site. There could be more in the way of commercial truck information as it relates to bodies. Nonetheless, the power of their Meet Our Staff page overshadows everything. It just makes you want to call them. That is a good thing for Sierra Chevrolet.
-----------------------------------
Here's what we liked:
- Clean basic site with short introduction with clear links in text along with a comprehensive menu.
- Meet Our Staff page with staff photos, cell numbers and email with a short bio. [I always want to emphasize the power of making a website personal. Great job!]
- Name, toll free phone on every page in header
- Map/Hours page has no map, but has hours layed out nicely.
- Testimonials tab is one of the few we have seen, yet it remains empty. Good job putting it there, now fill it in!
- Events tab is cool, but would be better with events. . .
- New and Used commercial trucks. Good photo array with larger photo available. I liked the focus on commercial products. The default search brought up some interesting pieces and the customer could go from there.
- A short history on the About Us tab. This is wonderful. Personalization is the best thing about making a website powerful. Stories. People love stories. I love these little history tabs. Great job!!
This is a good, simple and I think effective website for O'Reilly Chevrolet.
If you see a dealer commercial truck website that you think is a good one, please send it on to us. Email address at bottom of page |
Expanding Utility with WeatherGuard |
Everyone has heard of and probably seen WeatherGuard tool boxes, van racks and such. Indeed, they are a famous manufacturer of these products--an industry leader. Yet, here is a product line that dramatically expands the utility of your customers vehicle whether it is a pickup, a service body, van, or other body: the WeatherGuard Drawer Unit.
These come in 24" and 48" length and from a single 10 1/4" width drawer to the 39 5/8" wide. They also vary in height from 8 7/8" to 12 3/8". There are 14 different size units listed on their website and you can move the dividers around to suit a variety of items. They are reinforced to accommodate loads on top of the drawer unit, have a capacity of 425 lbs, and have a ONE-TOUCH (R) latch system. Drawers are weather stripped.
Here's some ideas for you:
Model 308-3 (48" L x 39 5/8" W x 8 7/8" H), 4 compartment unit with 25 dividers. This would be a great one for a pickup, service body or a van. The one just below is the same length and width, but is 12 3/8" high for even more storage!
Model 338-3
Model 335-3 (48" L x 20" W x 12 3/8" H) single compartment with 7 dividers). Put one of these on each side of a pickup or service body bed and have the remainder for flat storage while keeping smaller items readily available.
Model 306-3 (48" L x 20" W x 8 7/8" H) two compartment unit with 13 dividers.
You might buy one or two of these to show and maybe even mount one in a demo. Great way to expand utility. |

ABC Truck Body Innovations |
America's Body Company (ABC) is an industry leader bringing innovation to the truck body industry. ABC operates as both a distributor as well as a manufacturer of their own proprietary product offerings, such as platform/stake bodies, landscaper bodies, dry freight and cutaway van bodies. ABC was recently acquired by Reading. ABC has six locations around the country--six on the east coast, one in Texas and one in Portland, Oregon.
Consider some of these innovations to common products:
The Rugged American flatbed with a standard single piece, 3/4" white composite floor which reduces friction and allows for safer and easier material handling. The body is powder coated and is available in 10' to 26' lengths. This body comes with a confident, 5-year warranty. ABC doesn't show up in California much, so the first time I saw these ABC bodies was on a trip to Oregon and Washington. This photo is on a Ford LCF at Newberg Ford in Newberg, Oregon. It is so interesting to look up from under the bed and see light coming through the composite floor!

The photo above is the same flatbed with the S.M.A.R.T. composite rack option making use of interlocking panels that are interchangeable and can be used in any position. The SMART rack is considerable lighter for more fuel efficiency and/or increased load capacity, along with being made of strong, impact resistant materials that makes them lighter and more durable than steel. What's even better is the standard full 270 degree swing gates in the rear. It all adds up to great value.
The above photo is an ABC Landscape body using the Rugged American platform with composite floor, SMART rack system with metal panels fixed to the inside to create a Landscaper with lightweight sides. This photo taken on an Isuzu at Scarff Truck Center in Auburn, Washington.
This is a different version of the ABC Landscaper, with steel framed permanent sides with a swing-away front gate. This is interesting in that the material on the inside of the framing is the same composite material used in the floor. It makes for an extremely durable, yet lighter weight Landscaper. This one is a great looking body and also has a tarp. It is mounted on a Ford LCF and the photo was taken at Pierre Ford Fleet in Seattle, Washington.

Brand FX Composite Service Bodies |
The weight savings of these composite bodies is up to 40% which helps save fuel and increase payload. Carry up to a 40% greater payload and stay under maximum GVWR? That's a huge advantage.
Brand FX Body Company makes a full line of composite service bodies, line bodies and inserts, in addition to the Glasstite and GemTop lines. Here's some examples of the composite service bodies:
Model BFXB 43 LS on Chevy Colorado
Model BFXB 56 LS on Ford Super Cab 56" CA
Model BFXB 84 LS on GMT 84" CA
These are just a sampling of the full line of bodies from Brand FX with standard features like, rust-proof fiberglass construction, one-piece doors, gelcoat finish, stainless hardware, automotive grade weather seals, venilated compartments, non-skid top, separate wheel well panels and much more. Give this line of bodies a good look. Check out their website and give them a call. www.brandfxbody.com |
