City Center Highlights.....were you there?

The Baton Rouge City Center hosted their January meeting at Louisiana Office Supply.  State Representative Scott Simon talked in-depth about his first hand experiences dealing with ADA issues and creating environments that allow a disabled body to become an able-bodied person in the right building.  He inspired us all to create spaces that everyone can enjoy and to think outside the box when designing spaces.  Creating spaces which enhance connection to the ground, "bringing the ground up", allow for disabled individuals to really 'connect' in and around spaces.  If anyone is interested in contacting Scott, his contact information is below.

The January New Orleans City Center meeting was a great success. 50 attendees including members and non-members joined our tour of the Audubon Insectarium led by Steve Dorand, vice president of design and exhibitry at Audubon Nature Institute.
He spoke about the Historic Customs house that the insectarium is located in, which is the oldest customs house in the US. The interior of the Insectarium is spectacular and each room brings you into a different world of a bug's life. audubon-mothWe experienced the life of an ant, some of us tried bug delicacies, and we were able to stroll through the butterfly exhibit.
After the tour we ate lunch at Filipe's sponsored by Michael Boykin, Inc.  Thank you to all who made this awesome tour a success:  Rachel Smith, Steve Dorand, Michael Boykin, and Audubon Nature Institute!

________

The Mississippi City Center kicked off 2009 with a meeting in Jackson, MS on January 16th hosted at Business Interiors.  We had more than 45 architects, designers and industry members in attendance.  Special thanks to Kevin Leaumont with ASI Sign ASI signSystems for sponsoring our event and driving up from New Orleans for a very interesting and informative CEU on ADA Signage requirements as they are evolving.    He discussed current ADA requirements as well as consideration of soon to be implemented requirements as well.

Many thanks also to David Houpt with Business Interiors for having us !!  As well as allowing the IIDA Board full day accessibility to a meeting environment for our first board meeting to be hosted in the Jackson area.  We had record attendance from the board members !!  Thank you to them for taking the time to travel and meet !!  We want to continue growing our newly renamed - JACKSON CITY CENTER - and encourage the launch of a new GULFCOAST CITY CENTER  !!
We want to serve all our chapter members in a gratifying and ambitious way !!

We are looking forward to seeing you in February for another wonderful CEU to be provided by Global's Kim McConnell at Offisource.
