Greetings!

"The three days Jesus was in the tomb represent the three steps in overcoming error. First, nonresistance; second, the taking on of divine activity, or receiving the will of God; third, the assimilation and fulfillment of the divine will. "

Unity co-founder, Charles Fillmore, "Keep a True Lent"

Unity does not look at the Bible as a literal book, or as a book that was somehow dictated "by God" to the various writers. We look at the Bible as a collection of writings which can be symbolically interpreted to provide useful guidance to us today. New Thought teacher Emmet Fox said that we should each write on the covers of our Bibles, "This is MY story". The Bible tells us, through the use of story, allegory, metaphor, and symbols, the story of our own spiritual development, from the point of "forgetting" to the point of "knowing". We do not use the Bible to justify division or judgment against each other. We look at it as a guide to our own development- not as a way to prove another's shortcomings.

As we approach Easter, how does this portion of Jesus' story help us live better lives today? Fillmore has given us a clue in the quote above: the three days in the tomb are representative of the steps necessary as we overcome error in our own lives. First off, what is error? Error is simply when we are out of alignment with Truth in some aspect of our lives. Some faith traditions call it "sin"- we simply call it missing the mark.

Where in your own life do you feel dis-ease? What is one thing you would like to change?

The first step is nonresistance. The first step is to stop fighting and hating whatever this "unacceptable" thing is. We must release our anger, our hatred, our shame, our guilt, our feelings of lack and limitation, all of our thoughts of being "less than". Whatever it is that we are holding in consciousness that separates us from knowing Oneness must be released. When we resist, we give power to that which we do not want. New Thought gives us a great big toolbox, and we must be willing to use them all. Some of those tools are affirmation, denials, prayer, study, and contemplation.

The next step is to come to understand what is ours to do to bring ourselves into alignment with Truth. We turn within and listen. We meditate. We study. We declare our willingness. We put aside our preconceived ideas of how things "ought" to be. We say "Let there be Light. Let me know what is mine to know, to hear what is mine to hear, to see what is mine to see." We become present to Spirit within, and we listen. "Listening" might take the form of reading a certain book, or finding a lesson in a movie, or simply hearing old words in a new way. We are open and receptive. Patience is a good thing! We are willing to see with fresh eyes that area of our life that has previously been viewed only through the lens of limitation.

Lastly, put into action the wisdom that has been revealed to us. We choose (through wise use of our power of will) to follow through in the outer on the things that we have learned within. We are willing to actually do the things that will change our lives. Perhaps we update the resume. Maybe we learn a new skill. We might pick up the phone and call that family member with whom we've shared a troubled relationship. Yes, it is difficult. Yes, it can be awkward. We pause, we breathe, we admit to ourselves that change isn't necessarily easy, and we do it anyway. We place one foot in front of the other, and we put the Truth that we know into action.

Each time that we choose to live the Truth that we know, we move a little bit closer to that ideal pattern of perfection represented biblically by Jesus. By overcoming the appearance of physical death, Jesus showed us that there is no error that cannot be overcome through spiritual practice. During this holy, sacred season, I invite you to imagine your life lived from the perspective of the Christ that dwells within you. As you imagine that possibility, know that the first step is simply to stop fighting. Breathe. Relax. Rest in the Truth that there is only One Power, One Presence, and that One Power and Presence is Good. That is the only step you need to take to get started. Just stop fighting. event
