Greetings!

For the past couple of months, we've been focusing on the ways that we can learn to navigate conflict. By remembering that there is only One Power, only One Presence, we can learn to live the truth that no one and nothing is against us. Keep reading for our wrap-up to this series as well as other upcoming events. It is our hope that you'll find at least one thing that will enhance your life today and in the future!

LIVING ON PURPOSE

Do you know what your purpose is? In Unity, we teach that each of us shares one common purpose, and that purpose is to be the Christ.

Does that sound a bit audacious? Perhaps even sacrilegious? In The Revealing Word, by Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore, we are told that Christ abides in each person as potential perfection. This "Christ idea" is the spiritual nucleus of each one of us, and our real purpose is to fully express that Christhood. Learning to express the Christ that we are is the lesson that we must each learn.

As we wrap up our focus on the book, The I of the Storm by Rev. Gary Simmons, we come to this most important of all lessons: when we live on purpose- with intentionality, with willingness and with open heart - we are being "the Way, the Truth and the Life" that our Elder Brother and Master Teacher Jesus claimed as his identity. This is what Rev. Simmons calls "being the Way of God, instead of being in the way of God."

When told that we are supposed to be the Christ, it can sound impossible. We know that we're supposed to follow the example set by Jesus, and in theory, that sounds okay. But be the Christ? That calls us to a whole different level of Beingness... Rev. Simmons writes:

When we love with our hearts, we are the Way of God. When we look with our hearts, we are being the Truth of God. When we lead with our hearts, we become the Life of God.

So, as we bring this series to a close (for now... we will surely return to this in the future!), we come to the Really Big Question... how do we actually do this? How do you live in alignment with your purpose? How do you live the Christ-life that is your purpose? What does that look like in your day-to-day life?

A really good starting point is to discern what it is you have come here to be. We usually focus on what it is we ought to do. In spiritual matters, the most important question is about being. While we all share one common purpose- to be the Christ - we are each one of us a unique, individualized expression of that Christ. Jesus was the Christ of his world. You are the Christ of your world. One of the best ways to discern what you have come here to be is to think of those people you most admire, and what traits you most admire in them.

If you allow yourself to think of the top five people you admire (living, dead, historical, fictional) and why you admire them, you will most likely see themes emerging. You may realize that these folks share common traits of kindness, justice, and honesty. Or wisdom and compassion may be recurring themes. Trust this! Whatever you admire in others is what you are here to express. That is what you are here to "be". If you don't see a repetition of themes, re-read that list of traits and pick the two or three or four that have the most pull for you. Again, trust your intuition! You might not have not listened before, but you do know this.

The next time that you are faced with a decision, or find yourself in a conflict, stop and ask yourself: what action is in alignment with what it is you are here to be? How would a person who exemplified wisdom and compassion act in this situation? What is one wise and compassionate action I can take? When we act from what we are here to be, our actions are authentic. We are learning to live our Christhood.

You cannot change your past choices and actions, and you cannot predict what the future holds. Right now, right here, you can make your next action authentic by taking one step that is in alignment with what you are here to be. Learn to allow what you "do" to arise authentically from what you are here to "be". Step by step, choice by choice, moment by moment, be willing to live your purpose. Our fifth Unity principle is that it is not enough simply to know these things, but we must also live the Truth that we know. With each authentic action, you will be living the Truth you know. You will be expressing the Christ that you already are.

GOODS AND SERVICES SUNDAYS

After church, this Sunday and next: 10/9 and 10/16

This Sunday and next, please plan to stay after service and learn what goods and services are available from your friends in our spiritual community. We have a lot of entrepreneurial folks among us- you'll surely find at least one service you need being offered by one of your friends. Besides benefiting each other, are you aware that patronizing local, independent businesses is good for the whole local economy? Depending on the study, $100.00 spent at local businesses generates an additional $45.00 - $68.00 of local spending, as opposed to $13.00 - $15.00 of additional local spending when that same $100.00 is spent at a national chain or "big box" retailer.

SEE CLASS: Emmet Fox's Sermon on the Mount

Wednesdays, 10/5 through 11/9 (NO CLASS ON 10/19)

10:30am - 12:30pm and 6:30 - 8:30pm

Whether you are new to New Thought or have been studying metaphysics for many years, you will surely discover fresh new insights from this perennial New Thought classic. The Sermon on the Mount is the longest collection of Jesus' teachings in the Bible, including the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer. In Unity, we consider Jesus to be our main teacher and Way Shower; this is an excellent opportunity to learn what those teaching are, as well as how they remain relevant and accessible for us in our lives today. Unity Institute elective credit is available for the class, which Nita will facilitate. There is never a charge for Spiritual Education and Enrichment classes at Unity Church of Peace; a love offering will be blessed.

SEE CLASS: The Background of New Thought

Wednesdays, 10/5 through 11/9 (NO CLASS ON 10/12 or 10/19)

2:00 - 4:00pm

You may think that "New Thought" is new, but actually, our roots go deep and reach far back into history: out teachings branch back to Jesus on one side and to Greek philosopher Plato on the other. Of the three major New Thought organizations, Unity is the largest. Our closest brothers and sisters are those in Religious Science (generally now called Centers for Spiritual Living) and Divine Science. This is a required class for those on the path to credentialing as Unity teachers or on the path to ministerial studies. Nita facilitates the class. There is never a charge for Spiritual Education and Enrichment classes at Unity Church of Peace; a love offering will be blessed.

Sloan Wainwright

We are blessed to be hosting these two very talented women on their Fall Tour.  Sue and Sloan are very gifted singer-songwriters, two distinct voices, each sharing their unique view along the spiritual path.

The Boston Globe had this to say about Sloan's appearance at the Kennedy Center: ""Sloan Wainwright has spent her music career walking the road less traveled with her distinctive and soulful hybrid of rock, folk, jazz and blues. Her songs, like her voice, cast a lasting spell..."

Sue's new CD, Everything Changes, was produced by Daniel Nahmod, and will no doubt find its way into regular play on your mp3 playlist. Greg Tamblyn has this to say about Sue's music, "I especially love the variety: song styles, instruments, moods. My favorite cuts are "I Am The Thinker" and "Inside," but it's all beautiful. It's Unity. It's clear water!"

Nita Strauss

One last thing- I will be participating in the 3rd Annual Multifaith Pride Service being held at 7:00pm this coming Tuesday, Oct. 11, at First United Methodist Church, which is located at 915 E. 4th St. Arrive early for free parking at the adjacent Tyndall Ave. garage. This service is being presented by clergy from many spiritual communities in Tucson who welcome members of the LGBTQ community. Unity teaches that all people are created with sacred worth and that no one exists outside the heart of God. I am very honored to have been asked to participate.

I believe that two of the most important things in our spiritual toolbox are a willing attitude and an open heart. As long as we are willing and open we are teachable. By remaining teachable, we demonstrate our potential to grow. As each one of us grows in our understanding, we help to facilitate the growth and the understanding of the Wholeness that we are. Our goal is nothing less than the transformation of the world, which will be brought about one willing and open heart at a time. Thank you for being a part of this very transformative process!

Blessings...Nita
