"Our Work"
"The work that God appoints us to never demands of us more than we can do comfortably. Source never obliges us to neglect our own unfoldment of the Christ pattern within us. When we are doing as Spirit would have us do, It takes wonderful care of us, not by bringing supplies and placing them at our feet always, but by showing us how to use our own resources in a way to convert them into whatever we need or would use. One who is living the Christ life attracts blessings of all sorts, and need never worry about financial matters, though he will give enough thought and attention to them to keep his part of the law.
"Many individuals are going through a very definite period of awakening and adjustment these days. And many do not seem to know which way to turn. Employment of the past seems taken away. Nothing that one has done before seems to offer itself. Many times the reason for this is that the soul has been driving itself along certain ruts for a long time, and for its own good needs a change. It is not always best for a person to continue doing that which he likes to do, or that for which he has been trained, or that for which he is paid best. We need to round out, to develop, all our faculties and powers to do that which brings us close to humanity and that which increases what the world needs most. If we do not keep in touch with Spirit and heed its promptings, our own unconscious desires will take us out of the ruts and leave us floundering on the rocks, until we wake up and take hold of something that we shall find we like and that helps us and others."
-- Myrtle Fillmore, from her "Healing Letters"
Have you found yourself "floundering on the rocks" lately? Unity co-founder Myrtle Fillmore reminds us that Source will take good care of us, but not necessarily by dropping things at our feet. We will be shown how to use our resources, providing whatever is needed. We are told never to worry about financial matters, but we are to give care and attention and keep our part of the law. Mostly, we are told to "keep in touch with Spirit and heed its promptings". It is very difficult to do any of these things unless we are willing to be still. Unless we are willing to listen and to hear. And once we have listened and heard, we must be willing to act. We do what is ours to do and release our preconceived notions of what the results should look like. We let go of the need to be concerned with what others will think of what we are doing. We do what is ours to do and trust the that the promises of Spirit will be honored.
And what is ours to do? Our Master Teacher, Jesus, told us that we are not to worry about what we shall eat or what we shall drink or what we shall wear, but to strive first for the kindgom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to us. How do we do that? By becoming still. By letting go. By learning to trust. Prayer and meditation are the tools that bring our thoughts into alignment with Source. Be still. Be still. "Be still and know that I AM God." (Psalms 46:10, NRSV)
This does not mean that we sit in our rooms and meditate all day, expecting someone else to take care of us. If bills need to be paid, we find a way to pay the bills. This may not be doing the work that you think you ought to be doing. It may mean heading out in the morning, dressed for work, and going to Target and McDonalds and the insurance office down the street and offering your willingness to work. It may mean loooking at your car and realizing that getting from point A to point B is what is necessary- do you need a monthly $500.00 car payment to do that? It may mean investing in a coffeemaker and giving up $3.00 cups of specialty coffee.
If we pray, meditate, and really listen to the promptings of Spirit, we will be guided. We will be cared for. We will be blessed.
