Welcome to the second week of our Lenten practice.

One of my intentions as a teacher is to be make our teachings as clear as possible. Last week, I wanted to make it very clear that there is nothing magic about our spiritual tools. The WD-40 sitting in your toolbox is not going to spring to life and fix that squeaky hinge unless you get up and go use it. Just learning about the tools of denial and affirmation will not transform your life. Simply thinking that Lent is a good idea will have no effect in your life unless you put these tools to use. If you've been putting your tools to use this past week, good for you! If you're still waiting to begin... today would be an excellent day to start!

More Tools for Transformation -

Using Your Spiritual Toolbox (part 2)

Last week, I made the following statement:

...since you are the image-and-likeness-of-God, an individualized expression of Divinity, you must be strong and powerful because

God- Oneness - Spirit - is strong and powerful.

To be more accurate, I should have said, "because God - Oneness - Spirit is Strength and Power." Power and Strength are two of our twelve powers. Strength is our ability to remain steadfast in our determination. Power is our ability to exercise dominion and control. Each is very useful as we learn to train our minds to think in more productive ways.

Early Unity teacher Emilie Cady explains in Lessons in Truth that "God is power. Not simply God has power, but God is power."  In Keep a True Lent, Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore says, "Strength is freedom from weakness; stability of character, power to withstand temptation. It is the force or power to do, capacity to accomplish."

Returning to our affirmation at the top of the page, we can begin to see that not only are we affirming the Truth of our identity when we claim that we are "...strong, positive, powerful, wise, loving, fearless, free spirit", but we are also utilizing the powers and abilities that will help us to demonstrate that Truth in our lives.

Wisdom, and Love are two more tools that are already in our spiritual toolbox. As we exercise our powers of strength, power, wisdom and love, we allow our ability to release (our power of Elimination) to help us let go of fear. Through our words, through claiming the Word with our practice of denial and affirmation, it becomes easier for us to believe. That ability to believe is our power of Faith. As we develop faith, we begin to realize the Truth of our Master Teacher, Jesus' promise that, "According to your faith let it be done to you."

We use our power of Wisdom when we recognize that a daily spiritual practice will transform us. We use our powers of Strength and Power when we determine that we will honor our commitment to actually do the work and continue to do it even when it gets hard or boring or life gets hectic. We declare willingness to Eliminate fear, resentments, and whatever else may be behind us. We use our power of Love by recognizing that we must behave in ways that harmonize with Truth, being gentle with ourselves when we falter, and getting back on track again and again and again.

And one day, without even thinking about it, we look in the mirror, smile, and say, "I am God's perfect child", and don't even question it, because by doing the work, we have been transformed. According to our Faith, it has been done. We are thankful, we declare it to be so, and so it is. Amen!

I hope you are enjoying this exploration of Lent. Fillmore's book, "Keep a True Lent" has become one of my favorite spiritual guidebooks, and I look forward to meeting it again each year.

I also look forward to hearing from you and seeing you. Our Sunday service starts at 10:30am, when we sing, pray, and learn together. After service, you are very welcome to stay for refreshments and to meet your fellow spiritual explorers. If you have comments or questions, just use the "reply" button on your email- all replies come directly to me. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Once again, I invite you to pause, and know the Truth: YOU are strong, positive, powerful,

wise, loving, fearless, free spirit!
