Journeyman Training at Pax

Training tomorrow's leaders is of the utmost importance to the Corporate Center's clients, and can be an important part of succession planning.

The Corporate Center is working with NAVAIR to offer leadership courses to its Journeyman work force.  Four one-day courses are offered.
  • Adaptive Leadership raises leaders' awareness of the differences among people and situations.
  • Influential Leadership helps leaders get their ideas heard, accepted and enacted.
  • Leading Change focuses on the leader's crucial role in effectively leading change initiatives in the workplace.
  • Mastering Interaction Skills uses job-related situations to help leaders significantly improve their confidence in using leadership skills.
The Corporate Center has deployed these four courses to all U.S. NAVAIR sites, where they have consistently been highly rated by participants.

Pax River makes the courses available to the business community on a space-available basis.  The cost is $225 per person.  If you are interested, e-mail Karen O'Connor for more information.
GrassRoots Leadership

The GrassRoots Leadership Seminar is back this Fall.  The two-and-a-half day seminar offers participants tools to help organizations improve performance and create a culture in which people are engaged and act as owners.

The Corporate Center has offered GrassRoots leadership for two years, and it has rapidly gained in popularity.  Employees from NAVAIR, NAVSEA, Wyle, Wills Group, and others have enrolled.  Last Spring, approximately 30 of Wyle's managers even participated in a GrassRoots reunion, and recounted how they have implemented the seminar principles into their professional lives.
IT Solutions
GrassRoots will be held at CSM's LaPlata campus October 14-16 and CSM's Leonardtown campus November 18-20.

Training Tips

In our last Newsletter, we discussed activities that should take place before training begins.  To ensure maximum results, pre-training communication should explain why training is needed, what participants will get out of the training, and how training will help participants do their job better.

During the training, participants should:

  • Create an action plan to outline improvements to be made upon returning to work.
  • Identify potential obstacles to implementing the action plan items.
  • Inform the instructor about improvements expected to be gained from training.
  • Ensure that the expectations are met.
After training, a briefing should be held with management and employees to discuss:

  • Did the course meet the trainee and manager's expectations?
  • What did the trainee learn to do better?
  • How and when will the action plan items be implemented?
  • What assistance is required to implement new skills and knowledge?
  • How will obstacles to implementation be overcome?
  • What solutions have been found for current problems?
  • What can be shared with other employees?
After 30-60 days, trainees and management should meet to discuss the accomplishments that have occurred from action plan implementation.
