More than 90% of Corporate Center Training Is Customized
Southern Maryland companies can turn to the Corporate Center for customized training to ensure that training goals are met and training dollars are maximized.
More than 90% of the contract training that the Corporate Center undertakes is customized. During the pre-training period, a Corporate Center business developer meets with the client to undertake a needs assessment. Training objectives are established and gaps are identified. Trainers can then tailor the training to meet the client goals.
Business training has proven to be effective in ensuring employee satisfaction and retention. IndustryWeek managing editor-in-chief David Blanchard says firms that invest in worker training have better-qualified and happier employees. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (04/03/08)

Public Speaking Training Helps
St. Mary's Government Managers
This month, St. Mary's County Government contracted with the Corporate Center to hold three public speaking training sessions for their managers. They recognize that public speaking is an essential skill to have in both the workplace and community settings.
In the class, participants learned how to prepare for business and personal speaking situations; how to write, organize and deliver speeches; and, how to work humor into their speeches. During the day, each student gave one or more speeches, incorporating what they learned from the instructor and their peers.
"I've been with the county government for 19 years, and this is the best, most beneficial class I've ever taken," said Carol Gallagher, procurement manager.

SMECO Offers Electric Power
Technician Degree
Through a contract with the Corporate Center, SMECO employees are working toward an Electric Power Technician Associate's Degree by taking credit courses on-site at their Hughesville office. This degree is a partnership arrangement in which CSM provides the general education courses and SMECO provides the technical courses. Approved through the American Council of Education, these are transferable to CSM for credit.
Successful students will be prepared for electrical power technician careers ranging from apprentice to journeyperson. So far this year, there are 19 employees taking advantage of this educational opportunity. CSM's enrollment management team and academic advisement office will support this program by providing on-site open house information sessions and one-on-one advising for students.
Companies can work with the Corporate Center to provide open house information sessions on credit programs, as well as other opportunities the college has to offer their staff. To contact a Corporate Center Business Developer for more details, click here.

Once the decision is made to invest in employee training, management and employees need to conduct certain activities to ensure maximum results.
Management will get results from training if they communicate to the employees:
A pre-training briefing should include:
-
What skill and knowledge the employee needs to improve in order to do their job
-
Why the employee was selected to attend
-
The objectives of the training program
-
Specific skills to get out of the program
-
Any work problems for which they may get solutions
-
What the employee expects to get out of the training
-
What job improvements will be made to the way the employee does her/her job
-
How the improvements will be measured
In our next Corporate Center newsletter, we will discuss more training techniques employers can use. | |
