Northwestern to explore personalized medicine for scleroderma

Northwestern Medicine researchers have received two five-year grants totaling $953,000 from the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study scleroderma. The grants will enable researchers at Northwestern to identify biomarkers for the disease, and are the first step in developing a national resource for investigators studying scleroderma.

"These are game-changing grants for scleroderma research," said John Varga, M.D., professor of medicine and of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "They will greatly accelerate research into understanding fibrosis and its causes, and will move us toward personalized medicine for this complex disease."

Dr. Varga is chair of the Scleroderma Foundation's

Medical Advisory Board.

Dr. Paul Donohue responds...

Dr. Donohue,

Would you address scleroderma, Raynaud's phenomenon and CREST syndrome? It seems no one knows of these conditions, and not many doctors are familiar with them, either. I had to have two fingers amputated, as they were so badly ulcerated because the diagnosis was missed. There is no local support group, so my information is from the Internet.

Dr. Donohue's response.

Dr. Paul Donohue

Dr. Paul Donohue writes a daily column titled "To Your Health" that is syndicated to more than 175 newspapers. The question-and-answer series is one of the oldest health columns in the North America, having first appeared in the 50s. Dr. Donohue took over the series nearly 20 years ago.

Expiration Dates Matter

 Pill Bottles

If your medicine has expired, it may not provide the treatment you need. In this Consumer Update video, FDA Pharmacist Lisa Bernstein explains how expiration dates help determine if medicine is safe to use and will work as intended.
