Caregiver Challenges:

Emergency Escape Plan

CareGivers LogoIf you're among America's 54 million caregivers, knowing how to evacuate a loved one or how a loved one can take shelter during an emergency may not be as easy as just stepping out a door, or crawling out a window, especially if your loved one has mobility challenges and physical issues. Not only do you have to consider how you yourself will get out of the house during an emergency, but how will you get to your loved one to make sure they get out?

Actelion Athlete Profile:

John Marino

John Marino Actelion PhotoJohn Marino, vice president of the eastern business unit at Actelion Pharmaceuticals U.S., Inc., spends his life constantly on the move, rushing from one coast to the other and back in a matter of days. During this mad dash, he values the moments when he can take a deep breath, lace up his running shoes, put on a biking helmet or head to the pool for some laps. John is part of the Actelion Athletes, a group of Actelion employees who will swim, bike and run at the June 5 Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in honor of the Scleroderma Foundation, raising awareness of PAH and its impact on patients with scleroderma. (Click here for May 6 article.)

Alcatraz logoTwenty-four athletes formed eight teams of three to participate in the event, each taking a leg of the race.  John is the 25th athlete. He will be taking on the challenge of the entire course on his own. Rather than being intimidated by such a daunting task, John is motivated by his everyday life. His goal is simply...to finish, no matter how much he struggles to catch his breath or how tired his legs feel when he has to take yet another step. While John is buoyed by the support of his fellow Actelion Athletes, he is mostly inspired by the patients.

"I might not be a part of a team but I am not in the race alone. I'll have my fellow Actelion Athletes competing alongside and I'll carry the thought of every patient battling to survive through their challenging disease with me throughout the entire race," said John. "I'm proud these patients are letting me race in their honor."

Help cheer on John and his teammates - all the Actelion Athletes - as they continue their training for the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon and leave them words of encouragement on  our Twitter and Facebook pages.
