| "Why I Am Attending the Conference" |
CJ Connolly |
"This will be my first time attending a Scleroderma Foundation National Conference, and I'm looking forward to meeting with others who are tackling scleroderma head on so I can see what 'pacing' strategies are working for them! I'm also interested in attending many of the management and coping workshops that offer practical tips on how to manage the effects of scleroderma on a daily basis. In all, I hope to learn from others and from workshops about how to feel my best." - CJ Connolly of Noank, Connecticut |

| Questions and Answers about Shoulder Problems | May 2010
This booklet first answers general questions about the shoulder and shoulder problems. It then answers questions about specific shoulder problems as well as shoulder pain caused by arthritis of the shoulder. What Are the Most Common Shoulder Problems? The most movable joint in the body, the shoulder is also one of the most potentially unstable joints. As a result, it is the site of many common problems. They include sprains, strains, dislocations, separations, tendinitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder, fractures, and arthritis. Specific shoulder problems will be discussed later in this booklet. Read more. |
| Colorectal Cancer Screening | Colorectal (large bowel) cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Together, the colon and rectum make up the large bowel or large intestine. The large intestine is the last segment of the digestive system (the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine are the first three sections). The large bowel's main job is to reabsorb water from the contents of the intestine so that solid waste can be expelled into the toilet. The first several feet of the large intestine is the colon and the last 6 inches is the rectum.Learn more. |
| Long-Distance Caregiver |
By Helen Hunter, ACSW, CMSW
Families who struggle to care for a parent across the miles have a unique disadvantage. They cannot be there to know what is really happening. It is often difficult and frustrating to reach doctors or social service agencies and to be able to coordinate the needed care. The older parent may forget what the doctor has told them, or choose not to "burden" their child with problematic information. Indeed, many adult children are not aware that there is a problem until a visit is made, and they see the changes in the parent's physical, mental or emotional functioning. Learn more. |
