"Why I Am Attending the Conference"

"Having been a volunteer with the Scleroderma Foundation since its inception, I am delighted that the National Conference is being held in Boston where it all began in 1973.  I have had the opportunity to watch the Foundation grow from a support group of 34 to its current prominent status as a leader both in supporting those afflicted with scleroderma and in raising funds for the research seeking its cure. In the beginning who could have dreamed that people from all parts of the country would meet in Boston to hear such international and notable speakers as Dame Carol Black, M.D. of London and Dr. Stephen Katz , Director of NIAMS in Washington, D.C. among many other expert speakers? Every effort has been made to make this Conference among the best ever. So, let us join together and enjoy a weekend of education, fellowship and fun!

Study Suggests Link Between Scleroderma, Cancer In Certain Patients
Medical News Today LogoJuly 8, 2010
Patients with a certain type of scleroderma may get cancer and scleroderma simultaneously, Johns Hopkins researchers have found, suggesting that in some diseases, autoimmunity and cancer may be linked.
These findings could lead researchers closer to discovering what causes scleroderma, an incurable autoimmune disease that causes scar tissue to develop in the skin and in major organ systems, and to pinning down why some with scleroderma appear to be at increased risk of cancer. The insights add to the growing body of evidence linking some autoimmune disorders with cancer. Read more.

Third Age LogoSeveral little-known provisions of the new health-care overhaul law take effect in coming months that could have a lasting impact on the nation's health-care system.
They include eliminating co-payments for certain preventive services such as mammograms, giving the government more power to review health insurers' premium increases and allowing states to expand Medicaid coverage to low-income adults without children. Learn more.
Rural Caregiving
Today's Caregiver LogoBy Liza Berger
Caregiving in rural America carries a unique set of challenges. Medical care and other health and social services are few and far between, and transportation is scarce.  Meanwhile, poverty and a lack of younger family members in these areas present still more impediments to securing necessary care for loved ones.
