| Study Findings from University of Medicine Broaden Understanding of Autoimmune Diseases |
Data detailed in "Anti-endothelial cell antibodies in systemic sclerosis" have been presented. "Anti-endothelial cell antibodies (AECA) are a heterogeneous class of antibodies whose role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases with vascular involvement has been extensively studied. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is one of the systemic autoimmune diseases in which endothelial dysfunction is well defined and important in the development of the disease," investigators in Bucharest, Romania report. | Cincinnati Researchers Awarded Grant to Study Interstitial Lung Disease |
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has awarded a grant to researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Center to study ways ILD first appears in certain patient groups with autoimmune diseases and to better diagnose and treat it. Interstitial lung disease is a group of diseases that affect the tissues of the lungs instead of the airways, like asthma and emphysema do. It causes lung scarring, is more difficult to diagnose and treat than other kinds of lung diseases, and is often fatal. Learn more. |

| New York Teen Wins First Place at JSHS for Her Scleroderma Research Project |
 Last year, the Scleroderma Foundation received a request from New York high school student Evelyn (Eva) Rajon. Eva needed help getting statistics about scleroderma patients for her Intel Science Research project on "The Correlation between Depression Symptoms and Length of Disease in Scleroderma Patients." Dr. Ann Impens, a research investigator at the University of Michigan Scleroderma Program, was Eva's project and research advisor. At Eva's request, the Scleroderma Foundation created an online survey to help Eva gather additional data on the scleroderma population. The survey was distributed to over 9,000 men and women via the Scleroderma Foundation's weekly eLetter. Survey responses were anonymously compiled and sent directly to Eva. Learn more. |
