A group of Scleroderma Foundation volunteer advocates will make office visits to members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Oct 7–8 to urge them to become co-sponsors of two scleroderma-specific bills, H.R. 2408 and S. 1545. |

Thomas A. Medsger, Jr., M.D., was recently featured in the "Pittsburgh Tribune-Review" for the "Lifetime of Achievement" award he received from the Scleroderma Foundation.
Dr. Medsger is a Gerald P. Rodnan Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and director of the Scleroderma Research Program, where, over the past 35 years he has followed about 4,000 patients.
Dr. Medsger is also a member of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter and serves the Chapter in three capacities: as a member of the Chapter’s Medical Advisory Board, as the treasurer of the Board of Directors, and as the interim president. |

During the past few months, there has been much discussion in the PHA community about adult stem cell therapy for pulmonary hypertension patients. PHA's Scientific Leadership Council (SLC) issued a statement in May 2009 stating that stem cell use has not been adequately studied and neither the efficacy nor safety of stem cells to treat PAH has been established. |

Characteristic features include fibrosis of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and internal organs as well as abnormalities of the vascular and immune systems occurring in children 16 and younger. This disease is one of the most severe rheumatologic conditions diagnosed in children. |

Raynaud phenomenon manifests as recurrent vasospasm of the fingers and toes and usually occurs in response to stress or cold exposure. The phenomenon is named for Maurice Raynaud, who, as a medical student, defined the first case in 1862 as "episodic, symmetric, acral vasospasm characterized by pallor, cyanosis, suffusion, and a sense of fullness or tautness, which may be painful." |
