ACCENTUATE THE COLORFUL

Header

This season, designers are incorporating brighter, more vibrant tones in their clothing lines than the recent past. Gone are the minimalist hues of a down economy-shoppers can expect to see strong colors in the clothing industry, reflecting the current, more positive economic outlook.

Many businessmen hesitate to incorporate bold colors into their wardrobe, but you can enjoy rich tones without diminishing your professional image with accent pieces. Here are a few options:

  • Ties-Stripes, polka dots, and plaids offer a way to enjoy color without being overwhelmed by it. Choose a print with a main color you're comfortable wearing and a brighter secondary color to add interest. Purple, yellow, and even pink add vivacity to traditional tones such as navy or brown.
  • Shirts-A variety of solid, check, or striped shirts can bring tasteful color to your ensemble as long as you keep the intensity of the colors appropriate for business clothing. Choose a pinstripe that alternates bold with neutral to avoid an overly bright combination.
  • Accessories-Shoes, belts, and pocket squares are an easy option for adding flair to your wardrobe. Rather than limiting your choices to black or brown shoes and belts, consider warmer shades such as burgundy or cognac for your leather items. Select a pocket square or handkerchief that brings out a secondary color from your suit.

Broadening your accent color choices freshens up the wardrobe without starting from scratch. Add energy to your ensemble by wearing something dashing.

Q & A - ASK SANDY

Sandy Taboh colorQuestion: How much shrinkage should I allow for, when I select new dress shirts?

Answer: As your custom tailor, naturally we allow sufficient fabric for shrinkage, so you never have to worry about ending up with a shirt that's too small. If you still want to know the basics of shrinkage, remember that cotton fabrics will generally shrink more lengthwise (from top to bottom) than across (from side to side). Some shirts may shrink up to half an inch in length.

Check that you can fit one to two fingers between your neck and the collar. This allows room for ease in wearing and for any shrinkage. Most shirts will allow plenty of length in the body of the shirt, but make sure the shirt sleeves are long enough to lose half an inch and still reach to your wrist easily.
