Bike Lanes & Sharrows Coming to East Carson Street

City to remove stretch of dangerous, free parking and install bike lanes
|
The City of Pittsburgh is planning to install a mix of bike lanes and shared lane markings (aka sharrows), along E Carson St, from the Smithfield St Bridge to the Hot Metal Bridge in the South Side. Bike lanes will be installed where the road width permits, connected by sharrows where the road narrows.
Most significantly, a section of parking will be removed from 4th to 7th Streets. The free parking, which is alongside a retaining wall and within walking distance of Downtown, creates a dangerous cartway for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists alike.
The significance of this project should not be understated as it marks the first time in Pittsburgh where the City is choosing to install public safety improving bike lanes in lieu of free parking. We applaud this shift that values our public streets as places to move people safely over a place for free private automobile storage.
