BikePGH goes to the National Bike Summit in DC
Bicycling is under attack. We bike. We vote.
|

Every March for the past 10 years, representatives from Bike Pittsburgh have attended the National Bike Summit in Washington DC. At the conference, we attend bicycle advocacy workshops, network with fellow advocates and agency staff, and educate our elected leaders on why it's in the national interest and their district's interest to invest in better bicycling.
This year is different, though. Never before has biking & walking been under such unrelenting attack from Congress.
This week in Washington, we've been tweeting it up from the workshops and our meetings with elected officials. Our goal is for you to understand what's going on, but not to bore you to death with minutia and jargon.
We know that transportation bill stuff gets complicated and difficult-to-follow fast. Just please understand that this week in Washington is incredibly important for the future of the bicycling advocacy movement in the US. And we're there giving bicycling and walking in Greater Pittsburgh a voice.

Montour Trail gets wings
Montour Trail Airport Connector now open
| |
After over 10 years of discussion and planning, the Montour Trail Council has established a bicycle route into (and also out of) Pittsburgh International Airport. This means you can now start to plan your 2012 tours to bike directly to or from Pittsburgh Airport!
According to organizers, the Montour Trail is the longest suburban trail in the nation. The Montour Trail links up to the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail system, which extends from Pittsburgh to Washington DC.
"This is going to have tremendous impact on the visitation to this region by bike tourists from all around the country, and all around the globe," said Allegheny Trail Alliance President Linda McKenna Boxx, "access to the airport is definitely going to improve the world class reputation of our trail systems in Pennsylvania."

This exhibit brings you the images and voices of a diverse community of people who bike and the ways they interpret bicycling in Pittsburgh, whether for exercise, commuting, or fun, adventure and recreation.

The Pittsburgh Region Enters the National Bike Challenge
After months of top-secret development, we are excited to present you with the Bike Pittsburgh Bike Commuter Challenge!
|
The free BikePGH Bike Commuter Challenge runs from May 1st to August 31st and will be held as part of a national effort thanks to our collaboration with Kimberly Clark LLC, the League of American Bicyclists, and web developer endomondo.com. This nation-wide effort has allowed us to include some pretty incredible features in the new calculator. Participants will now be able to compare their standings on both local and national levels as individuals, teams of 10, workplaces, cities and states. There's even an app that smartphone users can download to directly track and log the trips you take. Unlike last year, all bike rides count, but a point system is in place that heavily credits daily trips, giving people who use bikes for transportation an advantage. Highmark Bluecross Blueshield and ALCO Parking are the sponsors of the local challenge.
This challenge will also serve as the bittersweet bon voyage to our Car Free Calculator as we know it. Despite its clunkyness, it served us well. Together as a city approximately 500 prople logged over 130,000 miles. Participants simply beat the original Calculator into the ground rendering it unable properly tally certain totals. This year we want to take that momentum and show the rest of the country that Pittsburgh is ready for the national stage. That means we're going to need more people logging more miles than ever before! Sign up today to take part in the pre season to be ready when the real action begins on May 1.
