Jan. 25: Bicycle Dreams at the Southside Works
Don't miss the Pittsburgh premier of the award-winning documentary about the world's most grueling bike race: the Race Across America
|
Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the Race Across America (RAAM), will premiere in Pittsburgh at the Southside Works Cinema on Wednesday, January 25 at 7 p.m. as part of the film's ongoing nationwide winter tour. The screening is co-sponsored by BikePGH and the OTB Bicycle Café.
The film, which has won numerous awards at film festivals all over the world, "is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through," says Stephen Auerbach, the director and producer of Bicycle Dreams. "They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It's a great subject for a film."
BikePGH is hosting the event as a benefit for Team Citius Junior Development Cycling. Team Citius was formed in 2010 to provide an avenue for young cyclists to safely learn to ride their bicycles in either an enthusiastic or competitive environment.
Tickets will be $11 in advance and $15 at the door the night of the show.
Before and after the movie, the OTB Bicycle Café on East Carson Street and will be offering discounts to moviegoers before and after the event. Movie goers can enjoy $3 Snow Melts, $1 Sloppy Joe's and $2 off Great Lakes.

Safe Passing Law Before PA Senate
Call your senator or send an email to let them know this is important to you
We've been waiting patiently for months for Pa Legislators to vote on this bill. After two false-starts last week we're hopeful that the PA Senate will vote today (Jan 23) on HB 170 - a bill designed to further protect bicyclists riding on our streets by clarifying safe passing creating a tool to assign culpability when a cyclist is hit. The legislation would make Pennsylvania the 16th state to approve a safe passing law. You can read more about the bill in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
What you can do to help make the Safe Passing Law a reality.:
Contact your Senator today and urge her/him to pass HB 170 with no amendments.

Bike to Work Day set for May 18
We're preparing for Bike to Work Day and need volunteers
Spring is just around the corner, which means that we're busy planning for Bike to Work Day, the first big Car Free Fridays event of the year! Typically for Bike to Work Day we coordinate several destination locations with the main event being held Downtown. This year we're looking at approaching the day a little differently by hosting more locations around town to greet people en route to their destination.
To pull this off will require a bit more coordination and planning. Bike Pittsburgh doesn't do it alone, we never have. Every year community groups, local universities, businesses, non-profits, BikePGH Members and volunteers, and the city have pitched in to make the day a success.
We need your help us make this Bike to Work Day the best yet! How to help:
Get your workplace involved!
If your company or the company you work for might be interested in supporting Bike to Work Day this year let us know. We got some good ideas brewing we just need some community support to make them happen.
Send an email to CFF@bike-pgh.org to let us know how you want to get involved.
