Help us reach 2012 members by 2012

Join today and help make Pittsburgh more bike friendly

2012 by 2012

If you've ever wanted more bike lanes and markings, secure bike parking, a bike-friendly workplace, or more fun biking events, you understand by now that membership in Bike Pittsburgh helps make these things a reality. We are the only local organization working to protect the rights of people who ride bikes and work towards the dream of a truly bike-friendly Pittsburgh. But we need your support to make it all happen.

Without a doubt, 2011 has been an exciting year for Bike Pittsburgh. With new bike lanes on the way, more bike racks in our business districts, a brand new edition of the award-winning Pittsburgh Bike Map, better bike access on public transit, the development of a bike-friendly employer program, the Car Free Calculator, and our biggest and baddest BikeFest to date, you can see we've been busy making Pittsburgh an even better place to ride a bike.

But, none of this would be possible without our members

Our membership base is essential - it amplifies our voice, and helps fund programs and projects that are necessary for a bike friendly city. Plus, you get great member benefits like discounts at local businesses and bike shops. Help us to reach 2012 members by 2012 and help us unlock a $2012 matching gift. We're getting close to our goal with only 300 members to go.

Putting a spotlight on bike ninjas

BikePGH teams up with Pitt to outfit over 60 bikes in under 2 hours

BikePGH Membership and Outreach Coordinator, Becca Susman, affixes lights to an light-free bicycle

In an effort to make our streets just a bit safer, we partnered with the University of Pittsburgh in early October on a targeted bike light giveaway in Oakland. The pop-up event was a huge success - so much so that we ran gave out 100 lights in under two hours.

The effort, which was the first of its kind in Pittsburgh, set out to specifically target people riding bikes sans lights. BikePGH staff and volunteers flagged down unlit riders where we then affixed free lights to their bikes. Planet Bike extended a discount to BikePGH that made this program possible. Thanks Planet Bike!

If you don't have lights, don't wait around for another giveaway. Use your BikePGH member discount at your local bike shop to outfit your bike ASAP. It will keep you legal and safer at night

You can read more about the program on our blog

Numbers talk when you bike and walk

Pittsburgh region closing in on 100,000 Car Free Miles logged

car free calculator
Car Free Calculator members are closing in on the goals we set for our first year. We need about 6000 miles to reach our goal of 100,000, and only 75 new members to reach 500. At almost 95,000 car-free miles logged, the numbers for our region are really stacking up: 5 million calories burned, $47,000 saved, and over 100,000 lbs CO2 equivalents kept out of the atmosphere. Way to go Pittsburgh!

If you don't know already, each time we hit a milestone a new raffle winner is drawn. The more often people log their miles the better their odds of winning a prize. So far seven people have claimed prizes donated from businesses like OTB Bicycle Cafe, Piper's Pub, Whole Foods Market, the East End Food Coop, and American Eagle Outfitters.

Follow the link to learn about the most recent raffle winner. Sign up today and help us meet the goals for the first year!
