There is so much going on, that we needed a second installment of the eMessenger this month!

SAVE THE DATE!

Donate to BikePGH on Tues Oct 4 through PittsburghGives

Matching gifts are a great way to make your donation go even further

pittsburgh gives 2011

The Day of Giving 2011 is on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 12:00 a.m. ET until 11:59:59 p.m. ET.

Never been a member?  Need to renew? This is a great opportunity to have your donation matched and go even further!

All charitable donations made to Bike Pittsburgh through PittsburghGives.org on Oct 4 will receive a portion of The Pittsburgh Foundation's matching pool. Plus, we lined up an additional match from a generous private foundation so that we will be able to match your donation dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $5000! Last year, Bike Pittsburgh ranked 8th out of over 400 organizations in terms of the number of donations (as opposed to the amount of money donated).  We were astounded by the grassroots support, and this year, we want to aim even higher! Spread the word and help us get even more people donating for the first time to Bike Pittsburgh, and help us unlock the additional $5000 match!

Visit PittsburghGives.org to find out how you can make a donation on October 4th that will directly fund the development of bike lanes, installation of bike racks, printing the Pittsburgh Bike Map and Bike Commuting 101 Guide, fun events, and even the development of bicycle-friendly policies for the City of Pittsburgh.

Not yet a member or need to renew?

If you need to renew your membership through the end of this year, or are not yet a member, give on October 4 through pittsburghgives.org and your Bike Pittsburgh membership will be honored. Or if you're a member in good standing, please consider giving an additional gift to help us expand our efforts to make Pittsburgh more bicycle friendly.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING ACTION!

92-6: Senate passes extension of Transportation Bill that includes dedicated funding for biking and walking

hot metal bridge
TE funds made the Hot Metal Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge possible

This year, around $700 million of Federal transportation funds, which is less than 2 percent of total transportation dollars, will be spent on bicycling and walking.  Thanks to your action last week, we made sure that this funding was not cut.

Last week, U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (Okla.) pushed to eliminate dedicated funding for the Transportation Enhancements (TE) program in the proposed six-month extension of our federal transportation bill ("SAFETEA-LU"). TE is the nation's largest funding source for walking, trails and bicycling.

Tens of thousands of supporters like you sent emails, letters and phone calls to their Senator leading to Sen. Coburn withdrewing this amendment!

The Senate voted to pass a clean extension of the current transportation bill that includes the dedicated funding for biking and trail projects.

This extension expires in March 2012, so we may be facing future attacks.

Keep reading and find out how TE money helped fund the Port Authority's Ride, Rack and Roll program.

100% of Port Authority buses now have bike racks

After a full 10 years of dedicated advocacy and leadership, the Fleet is Complete. Here is the story.

100percentOn Friday the Port Authority will be announcing that their fleet is now completely outfitted with bus-mounted bike racks. This momentous development didn't happen overnight. In fact it took a decade, with many different folks working to better the program. When it all came down to it, though, it was all about advocacy and leadership that made it happen.

It took 10 years, but we got there.

Click here to read the history of how BikePGH and our partners made it happen

Celebrate! You're invited to Transportation Exploration, an event celebrating sustainable transportation, on Friday, September 23 from 7:30 - 9:30 AM in Market Square. All are encouraged to bike, bus, carpool, or simply walk downtown to celebrate and show support for sustainable transportation and for our community leaders and elected officials who invest in it. There will also be a bike-rack-mounted bus parked so you can practice using the rack.

Liberty Ave "sharrows" become full-fledged bike lanes

Major safety improvements to the popular Bloomfield-Lawrenceville route

Liberty
The city added bike lanes near the confusing Bloomfield Bridge intersection

Way back in 2007, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl rode on the freshly painted bike lanes and shared lane markings (aka sharrows) on Liberty Ave, to dedicate the first inter-neighborhood bike lanes in the City.

Starting at Baum Blvd, the sharrows went through the Bloomfield business district and became bike lanes after the Bloomfield Bridge.  The project proved incredibly popular, so this year, the City has decided to upgrade the sharrows to full-on bike lanes.

Under our agreement with the City, BikePGH paid for the engineering of the new lanes, with the understanding that the City would install them.

As of today, they still need to add the bike symbols and any new signs. There will also be some work to improve the section around the Bloomfield Bridge to make that section safer. You can see how the bike lane has already been extended through the intersection.

Stay tuned for future exciting developments in Pittsburgh's cycling infrastructure.

Please contact Mayor Ravenstahl's 311 line to thank the Mayor and his staff for the upgraded bike lanes!

Bid on this bike and support BikePGH

Bidding ends tonight at midnight

bid bike

Pop City has been running an auction of this bike to support bike advocacy. This Novara city commuter bike from REI was the buzz of the BikeFest party last month and it can be yours if the price is right. Bid now and bid often--all proceeds go to Bike Pittsburgh.

Thanks to Leigh Yock who was at BikeFest and gave her ticket to someone at Pop City--we'll just call her Lucky--who stayed for the drawing and won. Leigh and Lucky decided to give back in this unique way, an online auction which Pop City has never done before. We're sure some rules apply but we have no idea what they are. Just email Pop City with your name and number or bid through the post on their site.

Auction ends next Wednesday, September 21st at midnight (or very early Thursday morning, to clarify)
