Don't let congress cut funds for biking and walking

Biking and walking funds are under attack. Let our senators know that this is unacceptable!

montour trail
The Montour Trail received
Transportation Enhancement Funds

This year, around $700 million of Federal transportation funds, which is less than 2 percent of total transportation dollars, will be spent on bicycling and walking.  In 2012 that figure might be a big fat zero. Please contact our Senators TODAY and let them know you support continued funding for biking and walking.

In the next few days, Senator Coburn will ask Congress to eliminate the federal Transportation Enhancements program - the primary funding source for the past 20 years for bike lanes, trails, bike racks on buses, bike education etc.  This isn't safe or smart; it's not good for the economy or the environment; this is bad health policy and bad transportation policy. But they are going to try because they don't think bicycling matters.

Even though bicycling projects create more jobs per dollar than highway-only projects and cutting enhancements won't impact the deficit - the money just won't be spent on bicycling - some Members of Congress want to force us backwards to a 1950s highway-only mindset: as if oil embargoes, congestion, smog, the obesity epidemic and climate change never happened.

Now is the time to save biking and walking.  As we expect the Senate to move first, we are asking you to contact your Senator and urge them to support continued funding for biking and walking. Don't let them take away this vital investment program for smart, sustainable, safe transportation choices.

Pittsburgh Bike Map Version 4 Hits the Streets

Brand new Pittsburgh Bike Map is now available. Lots of updates and additions!

bikemapv4

We are proud to announce the release of Version 4 of our Pittsburgh Bike Map. For this latest edition, we made several dramatic design changes as well as incorporating user feedback.

What's New?

The most noticeable difference is an updated look and feel. We replaced the cartoon-like appearance with a new design "based on a principal of simplistic convenience," says Colin Miller, a Visual Designer at Deeplocal. "The Bike Map is for those who will use it, bikers - so I didn't want to take away from the true purpose of the map with unnecessary frills."

The new style is intended to keep the information at the forefront, making it convenient for the viewer so the maximum amount of information could be conveyed with the least amount of visual effort. The graphics were all stripped down to be viewed more as icons than illustrations which keeps the map simple but communicative.

Where do I get one?

BikePGH printed 30,000 copies of the Pittsburgh Bike Map V4, that is available for free in various locations around town, as well as in every bike shop. We also printed a "Premium" version on a rip-proof, waterproof paper. The premium version is available for sale on the BikePGH website and in participating bike shops.

Official Map Release on Pittsburgh Park(ing) Day: Fri. Sept 16

BikePGH will be celebrating the map release during Pittsburgh Park(ing) Day, Friday September 16 from 8am-4pm. Park(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, international event where people collaborate to temporarily transform spaces designed for vehicle use into a communal space for public use.

Visit the Bike Pittsburgh lounge in front of Espresso A Mano at 3623 Butler St in Lawrenceville. We will have a button maker for people to make DIY buttons and will distribute the brand new bike maps.

Port Authority Fleet is Complete with Bike Racks!

Celebrate at the Transportation Exploration event: Friday, Sept. 23

transexplorYou are invited to Transportation Exploration, on Friday, September 23 from 7:30 - 9:30 AM in Market Square.  All are encouraged to bike, bus, carpool, or simply walk downtown to celebrate and show support for sustainable transportation.

Our decision makers need to know that biking, walking, transit, and other transportation alternatives are worth investing in and prioritizing. Participating organizations will be on hand to answer commuters' questions about how to get around Pittsburgh without defaulting to getting behind a wheel of a car for each and every trip.

The main cause for celebration at Transportation Exploration will be the product of a long-running partnership between the Port Authority and BikePGH. The Port Authority will officially announce that their entire fleet, ie 100% of their buses are now outfitted with bus-mounted bike racks - an important development for people who want to combine transportation options.  A Port Authority bus will be parked in Market Square to allow people to practice racking their bikes. The crowd will be welcomed and addressed by BikePGH Executive Director Scott Bricker, Port Authority CEO Steve Bland, GBA Director of Innovation, Aurora Sharrard, and others.
