Thurs, June 9th: Bike-share demonstration

Bike-share Demo in Market Square

Bike-sharingAre you bike-share curious? Check out the bike-share demo during the Market Square Farmer's Market on Thursday from 10am-2pm.

The B-cycle demo team is coming to Pittsburgh. BikePGH, as your local bicycle advocates, is exploring public bike-sharing as a means of alternative transportation, and we want to invite you to check it out. In the past few years, cities like Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington DC have launched bike-sharing systems, which have become immensely popular. People can checkout a bike from a network of automated bike-share stations, ride to their destination, and return the bike to a different station. And now you get to try it out in Pittsburgh!

B-cycle, recently named by Fast Company as one of the 10 Most Innovative Companies in Transportation, was created to bring bike-sharing to communities around the US, and they have already launched in cities like Denver, Chicago, San Antonio, and Des Moines, and will be demonstrating the B-cycle system to the city of Pittsburgh in Market Square on Thursday, June 9th from 10am to 2pm during the Farmer's Market.

At the demo you can:
  • Check a bike in and out just like you were a member of a B-cycle network in Pittsburgh
  • Test-ride a B-cycle
  • Support cycling and alternative transportation efforts in Pittsburgh
  • Respond to a city survey and let your voice be heard

Where: Market Square, Thursday, June 9th, 10am-2pm

Still don't quite get it? That's OK. It's new!
Bike-sharing has only recently started emerging onto the scene, but has started gathering tremendous steam in the past few years. Now you can see it in action in hundreds of cities worldwide. Come down to Market Square on Thursday to check it out and see how bike-sharing could work for you.

See the B-cycle website for more details on bike-sharing and the company itself.

Gil Peņalosa to speak on Moving People, Not Cars

cityLAB presents internationally renowned livable cities expert

Gil Peņalosa is the Executive Director of 8-80 Cities and a founder of the famous "Ciclovia" in Bogota, Colombia. Ciclovias are when a city opens up a series of roads, usually on a weekend morning, for non-motorized use only. The results of "bringing the parks to the people" have been tremendously positive, and cities around the world (yes, even cities the US) are now organizing using streets in this manner to bring neighbors and communities together in a fun, healthy atmosphere.

Ciclovias are not only known for the family-friendly riding, walking, and playing experience, but also for dance lessons, football games, and yoga classes. Mr. Peņalosa will be speaking about ciclovias and other ways to design our cities for people of all ages and abilities.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn what cities all over the world are doing to provide for walkers and bike riders.

Monday, June 13 / New Hazlett Theater / 6:30pm
