Protect yourself: What every bicyclist needs to know about car insurance
|
|
Many crashes involving bicyclists go unreported, and many bicyclists involved in crashes don't seek proper medical attention
We took some time consulting with a local lawyer to figure out exactly what you need to know regarding insurance, riding bikes, and making sure you are rightfully compensated for any injuries or hospital bills.
Often car insurance, either the other driver's or your own (if you have it), will cover many of your expenses. But, there are things that you should always do if you are involved in a crash while riding your bike.

Don't forget to hand-write your letter to Mayor Ravenstahl
|
Help get more bike lanes! Hand-write a letter to be hand-delivered to the Mayor!
In 2010, the City of Pittsburgh installed about 5 miles of bike lanes and sharrows, mostly in East End neighborhoods. These lanes were a welcome addition to the emerging city-wide bike lane network, and showed that the City was serious when, upon receiving the "Bronze Bike-friendly Community" status, Mayor Ravenstahl proclaimed that there will be "25 miles of new bike lanes and sharrows in two years."
We want to make sure this momentum continues, so we decided that we'd deliver to him a bunch of "Thank You" notes to demonstrate how much support Mayor Ravenstahl has for his bike initiative, and how bike lanes have positively impacted the lives of thousands of Pittsburghers.
We're looking for fun, creative responses on our kinda boring form letter on how more bike lanes will change your life. The idea is that hand-written letters are more effective than emails, form letters, and post cards, so write-away!
 | | Click on this letter to download the pdf |
Here's the deal:1. Print out the form letter to the mayor 2. Tell the Mayor how more bike lanes will improve your life. Use a colorful marker if you want. Draw a picture. Be creative or clever, or don't be! 3. Return it to us at BikePGH by June 1, 2011 It's that simple.
Mail completed letters to: BikePGH attn: Bike Lanes 3410 Penn Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15201

Volunteers needed for Steel City Showdown
|
| Sunday, April 17: Unique Spectator-Friendly Pittsburgh event in need of volunteers
The Steel City Showdown is a Downtown/Northside criterium bicycle race. The spectator friendly event will feature a sideline party or "Tailgate" on General Robinson St, where spectators can watch the racers sprint across the Roberto Clemente Bridge as they complete their laps. The public will get an opportunity to mingle with cyclists, check out bikes, learn many aspects of the sport of cycling, and get information on future cycling events in the city. Racers will learn why Pittsburgh is known as "The City of Bridges" as they race a closed 0.8 mile loop over the majestic Allegheny River.
This unique event is fast approaching. Organizers are searching for volunteers to fill several jobs to help the event go smoothly. Right now they're looking for a responsible person to fill a "Volunteer Coordinator" position, who will help assemble volunteers before the event and manage them on race day. They will be able to provide some assistance and compensation in the form of a free t-shirt, free food, attendance at their exclusive sponsor happy hour, and other perks. The organizers are also looking for people interested in other race-day jobs such as course marshals, morning setup and afternoon teardown. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact steelcityshowdownvolunteers@gmail.com Please see the Steel City Showdown website for more details on this exciting event
