Pittsburgh sees 206 percent growth in bike commuters since 2000

Find out how bike lanes are created to meet this demand

bike lanesIt's proven that more bicyclists on the street increase bicyclist safety.  It's also shown that more bike lanes increase the number of cyclists.  The latest results from the US Census' American Community Survey are in, and it shows that Pittsburgh experienced the 4th largest growth (since 2000) in the country in bike commuters!  Not bad for a city with so few bike lanes.  Also, when adding biking and walking workers together, Pittsburgh is ranked #2 in the country for a fossil-free commute!
Read the full ACS report here.

Did you know that BikePGH pays for much of the City's bike lane engineering?

Now, the infrastructure needs to catch up to the demand.  Over the past year, we worked diligently with the City of Pittsburgh to plan for and design over 12 miles of new bike lanes that we have been waiting patiently to see installed. As of today we have learned that the contractor plans to install these markings next week.  We are on the edge of our seats because the end of painting season is fast approaching. Will we see these new bike lanes and sharrows go in before it's too late? And will the City be able to get all 25 miles of new lanes in that the Mayor pledged by the end of next year?

Tune in to our next communique when we will let all 5,000 readers of the eMessenger know the latest.

CMU and the Oakland Transportation Management Association are in the process of studying the Fifth/Forbes corridor (between Bellefield and Margaret Morrison) and how to improve it for pedestrians and bicyclists.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to alter the shape of such a large section of the city, so we need to show that there is support for better biking and walking facilities.  It's part of CMU's master plan - a huge initiative.

While you're at it, the City of Pittsburgh is developing a Route and Signage Plan to help cyclists find the best routes between neighborhoods and destinations.  They want to know which of the three designs to the left that you like best.
