PARK(ing) Day Lounge and Ride: Friday, September 17

Ride on over to visit the Bike Pittsburgh Lounge to see how we've transformed a parking space into a temporary lounge for PARK(ing) Day 2010. Whether you are going to work, on your coffee or lunch break, you cannot miss this!
  • 8:30am-4:00pm: Visit us on Craig St in Oakland, near Caliban Bookshop!

What's the Bike Pittsburgh Lounge? And what's this "PARK(ing) Day?"

The Bike Pittsburgh Lounge is the parking spot we'll be transforming Friday for PARK(ing) Day: the annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.  There are over 25 locations around town that will be transformed!

Bike Pittsburgh staff and volunteers will be interviewing people for the very new Bike Pittsburgh Channel. We'd like to hear what you like about biking in Pittsburgh and what you would change if you suddenly had magic powers. Also, we'd just really like it if you stopped by to say hello. (We'll only share your opinions if you want us to).

But I just want to ride my bicycle, bicycle, bicycle...

You're in luck! Industrious and illustrious Bike Pittsburgh volunteers are orchestrating a lunch-time bike tour of all (or most) of the 25+ temporary parks. Meet at the Bike Pittsburgh Lounge for the ride at 11:45 to leave at noon. Ride for as much or little as you like.

See our blog for more information.
Route and Signage Plan Meeting

Exciting Chance to Share Your Opinion and Wisdom about the Streets of Pittsburgh!

We've launched the next step in a major project that BikePGH is working on with the City of Pittsburgh: The Bicycle Route and Signage Plan!

Portland's got the right idea with signage!

Often the best bicycle route between two points isn't the same as the "better known," congested driving route, leaving many cyclists, and would-be cyclists, intimidated and frustrated.  The Bicycle Route and Signage Plan will create a network of signed on-street bike routes that will help guide cyclists between neighborhoods and attractions.  Based on BikePGH's Pittsburgh Bike Map, it will also help inform the City where on-street bicycle improvements, like bike lanes and sharrows, should be located. The steering committee has picked a consultant, who is now looking for public input to help them fine tune the Plan.

What they need to know is - which of the preferred routes on the BikePGH Bike Map should be signed with Bike Route Signs providing directions, destinations, and distances?

Tell us where signed routes should be established and which destinations should be included on the signs.  Let us know which hills are preferred and which ones to avoid.  Can you think of a street that could really benefit from additional signage or a contra-flow bike lane?  Tell us!

Bikestravaganza: Off the Chainring Tour Comes to Pittsburgh

Bike Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Library, and OTB are partnering to bring you a traveling road show of bicycle talk, movies, zines, and transportation activism and advocacy.

The show goes from 6pm-7:30 at the Carnegie Library in Oakland.

THEN we'll get on our bikes and ride together to OTB for an after-party and discussion with yummy food and drink specials.

Bike Pittsburgh worked hard to get this event to Pittsburgh for you: we're one of only two stops on the East-ish side of the country!

Elly Blue and Joe Biel will present short videos and a slideshow about Portland, Oregon's famous bicycle culture and infrastructure, followed by an interactive discussion of the future of transportation infrastructure and advocacy in Pittsburgh, Portland and beyond.

Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in the conversation. Microcosm Publishing will have a table of books, zines, and movies. [Suggested donation is $3 to $10 sliding scale]

* Please email lolly@bike-pgh.org if you plan to attend so we can determine capacity.
