New statewide bike/ped advocacy group hires first Executive Director
|
|
A first in the Commonwealth
There's a new statewide bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group that BikePGH, along with other local organizations such as Greater Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition, Walk Bike Berks, and Lebanon Valley Bicycle Club, helped found. One of the goals of the new group, Pennsylvania Walks and Bikes, is to move the state from one of the least "Bike-Friendly States" in the Union. One of the first actions of the group was the first PA Bike Summit in Harrisburg where we all met at the Capitol to meet with our elected officials to discuss issues related to biking and walking in the state.
Thanks to the Alliance for Biking and Walking, a nationwide advocacy organization, we were able to secure funding to hire our first staffer, Michele Barrett, as Executive Director.
A statewide advocacy group was long overdue, and we're proud to have been part in its creation.

We are extremely excited to announce our summer-long matching gift program. There is no better time to join and become a member or renew your membership.
Membership is our most important source of income. The
more members we have, the stronger our voice! When you visit other
bike-friendly cities in America and wonder why Pittsburgh isn't the
same...remember, those cities weren't always that way. They became
bike-friendly due to a strong grassroots movement that was at the
table, representing the needs of cyclists. Pittsburgh is no exception.

Cycling Tips: Love your bike, lock it right!
|
|
Don't let a jerk ruin your commute! We hear a ton of stories about bikes loved and lost. Although every story breaks our hearts, most of the time the loss was preventable.
Pittsburgh bike thieves are really opportunistic and will mostly steal the low-lying fruit. A word of advice: have a better lock than the bike next to you.
On our website we have a great list of Do's and Don'ts that you should check out.
Here are some highlights to prevent the most common bike thefts:
DON'T LEAVE YOUR BIKE ON YOUR PORCH UNLOCKED!!! - This is possibly the number one stolen bike scenario. Your porch is not a safe space. A rule of thumb - if you can't keep an eye on your bike, lock it up.
DON'T USE A CABLE LOCK OR A CHAIN FROM A HARDWARE STORE!! - Many cable locks and chains can be broken with common tools. This is especially important in Oakland and Downtown. We recommend a strong U-lock for starters.
and please...
DON'T JUST LOCK YOUR FRONT WHEEL!! - Unless it's the only part of the bike you want to secure.
If you do happen to get your bike stolen, there is still hope in the Internet. We've helped recover quite a few stolen bikes using tools such as the Report a Stolen Bike link on our message board and websites such as Craigslist.
