Your comments are needed on the Stimulus Package projects
|
|
Add your voice to these proposed projects
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC), our regional planning organization that controls vast sums of money (including dispersing a chunk of the stimulus money), has released potential "shovel ready" projects, many of which will come to life as part of the stimulus package. These could begin construction as early as Spring/Summer 2009.
There is a necessary public comment period in order to add these projects to the current list of transportation projects.
Several cycling and pedestrian improvement projects are on the list, and it's very important that you send in your support for these.
This is also another chance to add our voice to the mix and demand that bicycling and pedestrian infrastructure is not only included on it's own, but also included in road projects intended for all users. It would be a shame to have a road project completed, and cyclists and pedestrians were yet again excluded from the design.

IMPORTANT Safe Passing Legislation - Contact Your PA State Representative
|
|
Help move Pennsylvania off of the "Worst States to Cycle In" list
PA Bikes and Walks, a new statewide bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group that BikePGH is a member of, has released an important action alert.
On the table are two important pieces of legislation: 1) a "4 foot passing law," requiring motor vehicles to pass cyclists with a minimum of 4 feet, and 2) a law protecting cyclists from the dreaded "right hook," where a motorist passes a cyclist on the left and turns right into the bike's path.
Although we think it's common sense for drivers to pass with a minimum of four feet and never make a right turn in front of a cyclist, these laws are intended to to protect us in the unfortunate event that it should happen. All too often the cyclist is blamed for any crash (just ask someone who's been in one), and often has little to no recourse or support from the law.
The prime sponsor, Rep. Ron Miller, is reintroducing this bill very soon. It is imperative to have the bill co-sponsored by as many of the 203 House members as possible.
