The Bicycle Commuter Act Finally Passes Congress
|
|
Bicycle commuters allowed a $20 per month reimbursment
 The Bicycle Commuter Act has been in front of Congress for seven years;
it's a simple, equitable provision that puts cyclists on the same
footing as people who get tax breaks for taking transit or driving (or
parking, actually) their cars to and from work.
Effective January 1, 2009, the tax provision will allow employers to set up a reimbursement program for their employees (up to $20 per month), or let their employees put away $20 per month tax-free from their paychecks towards bike commuting costs.
Interested employers and employees can visit the Accor Services website to get more information and sign up for the program.
The League of American Bicyclists, a DC-based national bicycle advocacy organization, is doing the groundwork to make sure this gets implemented in a clear way.
They also have the most up-to-date and comprehensive information and FAQ on the subject.

BikePGH's Thrifty Winter Ride Guide
|
|
Winter riding gear doesn't have to cost you your paycheck
We created this Thrifty Winter Ride Guide to help you continue to ride, even when weather tells you not to. We're trying to show that the gear that most people have around the house can be used for winter riding. Just because it wasn't made for cycling, doesn't mean that it isn't any good. We start from the top of the head and go down to the toes. This list is also assuming that you just moved here from Los Angeles and don't have any winter gear at all. Most of us in Pittsburgh already have at least some of these items, so just strike it from your list as you add up the costs. Check out our Thrifty Winter Ride Guide

AASHTO and PennDOT seeking public input on '09 Transportation Priorities
|
|
AASHTO launches IToldThePresident.org for the public to comment on '09 Transportation funding

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
(AASHTO) have launched a campaign to influence President-elect Obama's
federal transportation spending priorities. The campaign, joined by
PennDOT, launched the website IToldThePresident.org to provide the public with a forum to submit written and video comments.
This is an opportunity to build awareness about the importance of
biking and walking in America's transportation system. A major challenge facing
President-elect Obama and the new Congress will be to pass a new
transportation bill before the current federally funded highway and
transit programs expire on Sept. 30.
The campaign will continue through the inauguration and will compile
videos and comments to present to key federal officials in January.

Three Rivers Heritage Trail Action Alert
|
|
Ensure Uninterrupted North Shore Trail Access
Development
of the trail and riverfront park area adjacent to the Casino is moving
along swiftly. The temporary detour currently in place has heightened
the awareness of this important corridor for public recreational and
commuter use. Please take a moment to contact the Mayor's office and
voice your desire for complete and uninterrupted trail connectivity.
Ask the City to assert its authority to ensure that this segment of
trail remains open and uninterrupted for public use as part of the
overall Three Rivers Heritage Trail System.
