Bike Advocates: Please send your thanks
|
|
Show our elected officials your enthusiastic support for bikes!
Two weeks ago, East Liberty Blvd went on a much-needed road diet. This wide, high-speed road; which passes in front of a high school, churches and residences, was re-engineered to calm traffic and provide safer access for everyone (motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists). A traffic engineering study showed that the 1.5 mile road was far too wide for the amount of motorized traffic that it carried, so people treated it like a freeway and traveled at unsafe speeds.
The 3 new miles of bike lanes (1.5 each direction) extend from Negley Ave to Frankstown Ave, providing a safer alternative to Penn Ave for travelling to the surrounding communities and parks and serve as one piece to a much larger network that will one day connect all the parks in the East End by bike.
What we need now is for you to contact the following people to show your appreciation and support for new bike lanes. Make it personal and tell your story about why bike improvements are meaningful for you and the future of our city. This is how we win support! Please make this a priority.
If you need some help, here's a sample letter that you can cut and paste and edit as you see fit. It's much better if you can personalize it, but the key is to get as many people writing and calling in as possible.
"Thank you for your vision and support of the new bike lanes that connect Garfield, East Liberty, Larimer, and Shadyside; and will soon connect to Highland Park, Point Breeze, Homewood, and Squirrel Hill with future sharrows on Highland Ave and a new bike path through Mellon Park that will connect to Frick Park via Beechwood Blvd. I am thankful that local officials, community groups and bike and pedestrian advocates are working to increase the quality of life in Pittsburgh by making our streets safer for everyone who uses them. In a time of economic uncertainty, increasing financial constraints, and environmental awareness, I appreciate the City taking action to provide a safe, economical and environmentally friendly alternative to driving. According to the Census' 2007 American Community Survey, Pittsburgh has one of the lowest rates of car ownership in the country out of the 60 largest cities, and has one of the highest percentages of people who walk, bike and take transit to work. The improvements to East Liberty Boulevard directly address these facts. Please continue to support bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements in the East End and throughout Pittsburgh."

We need your help to keep the momentum going
In order to better manage our volunteers and get people involved,
we've created a handy dandy Volunteer Application. It should only
take about a minute to fill out, and it's the first step in getting
involved in changing this city.
When you volunteer at Bike Pittsburgh you don't just volunteer, you
join a community of individuals passionate about making Pittsburgh one
of the world's bike-friendliest cities.
We have plenty of volunteer opportunities throughout the year such as party planning, staffing the bike valet, delivering materials, to stuffing envelopes and office stuff. It's also a great way to meet other local cyclists.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your interests as a volunteer.
