East Liberty Blvd goes on a safety improving "Road Diet," gets brand new bike lanes
|
|
Bike lane replaces a lane of car traffic
East Liberty Blvd had a dramatic face lift this weekend. This once highway like road, which runs in front of a high school, had some re-engineering to slow down traffic and provide safe access for bicycles. Basically, the road was a bit too big for the small amount of traffic that it carried, so people treated it like a freeway.
The 3 new miles of lanes (1.5 each direction) extend from Negley Ave to Frankstown Ave, providing a safer alternative to Penn Ave for travelling to the surrounding communities and parks.
Check out the new lanes at our Map Launch Celebration, only two blocks away on Thursday, Oct 16th (see previous entry).
Many thanks go to Departments of City Planning, Public Works, East Liberty Develpment, Inc, URS Corporation, and Stephen Patchen, the City's new Bike/Ped Coordinator.

US Census Bureau says Pittsburgh bike commuting rose in 2007
|
|
We now rank number 11 out of 60 biggest cities
According to the most recent American Community Survey by the US Census Bureau,
bike commuting took off in 2007 here in Pittsburgh. Commuting to work
by bike, an activity that .8 percent of Pittsburghers engaged in in
2006, increased 37.5 percent in 2007 to 1.1 percent landing us in the
top 11 cities in the United States.
For walking to work, we remained in second place next to Boston with an impressive 12% of us using our own feet.
Not bad for a city that only recently started putting in a cycling infrastructure.

Get Involved! Fill out our Volunteer Application!
|
|
We need your help to keep the momentum going
In order to better manage our volunteers and get people involved,
we've created a handy dandy Volunteer Application. It should only
take about a minute to fill out, and it's the first step in getting
involved in changing this city.
When you volunteer at Bike Pittsburgh you don't just volunteer, you
join a community of individuals passionate about making Pittsburgh one
of the world's bike-friendliest cities.
We have plenty of volunteer opportunities throughout the year such as party planning, staffing the bike valet, delivering materials, to stuffing envelopes and office stuff. It's also a great way to meet other local cyclists.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your interests as a volunteer.
