National Park(ing) Day hits Pittsburgh
|
|
Friday, September 19th
Park(ing) is a one-day-phenomenon started in San Francisco that is
now spreading both nationally and internationally. A collective of
artists, activists, businesses and citizens, Park(ing) provides a unique
opportunity for people to collaborate and transform
parking spaces around the city into temporary 'green'
spaces. The goal is to showcase the possibilities for reducing
pollution and land development impacts from automobile use.
This year, Pittsburgh is taking part in National Park(ing) day with eighteen locations planned around the City.
Bike Pittsburgh will be taking over Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's parking
space for the day. Come by and hang out with us in our downtown park (complete with grass and trees) on
Fourth at Grant St! You can also come and park your bike with us and
we'll watch it for you while you're doing your business downtown. Press event with the Mayor and Councilmand Dowd at 9:30am in the "park". Stop by and show your support!

We need your help in case of a transit strike
|
|
Please take this quick survey
There is a very real possibility of a strike in the coming days or weeks ahead by the Local 85 Amalgamated Transit Union. In the case of a halt in transit service we want to help as many folks get to work by bike as possible.
Please take this quick survey and let us know how you might be able to help.
Note: Bike Pittsburgh is not taking sides on this issue. We're here to help folks get to work safely by bike throughout the year. In the case of a strike there will be a lot of new riders on the streets and we want to make sure they stay safe, feel supported by the bike community, and have everything they need for a comfortable commute.

We need your support to continue this important work

Free Ride launches new website. Needs feedback.
|
|
Check out the new site and take the user survey
The Free Ride Recycled Bike Collective recently launched a brand new website. The new site features a blog, calendar, and other features to keep people up to date on the latest news, events and happenings.
Take their survey! They also need people to take a survey about their experience visiting and using the shop. Please take a moment and fill out the survey. They are currently trying to reorganize and how best to serve the community.

Several collective members are also about to take a trip to San Francisco to attend the Bike Bike Conference of Community Bike Projects, which was hosted here in Pittsburgh last summer.

Pennsylvania ranked 38th in bike friendliness by LAB
|
|
Lack of Complete Streets Policy and safe passing law cited for poor ranking
The Washington-based League of American Bicyclists
ranked states for bike-friendliness for the first time. Washington
State was ranked first, while neighbors West Virgina ranked last. Not
surprisingly, Pennsylvania ranked toward the bottom of union. Although
they cited PA's route system as "exemplary," they cited our lack of a safe passing law and a Complete Streets policy as major reasons for the ranking.
Another
reason cited was that there are no PA cities that are designated as
"bicycle friendly communities," a distinction that Bike Pittsburgh, the Mayor and
Councilman Dowd want to change. At a press conference in August, Dowd said that by 2009 or 2010, "the City of Pittsburgh will officially
apply for Bike Friendly status."
Our
continued to work to make Pittsburgh more bike-friendly will hopefully
give Pennsylvania a "most improved" status for future rankings.
