Free Ride's Adult Basic Mechanics Classes
Registration begins for August 3rd through September 7th session
bike fest banner
The course is designed to give students the basic knowledge they need to move onto more complex repairs and systems. Since each class builds off of the previous one, it is important that you attend every class.

Bring yourself, a willingness to learn, and a pen and paper if you want to take notes. You may also bring in your own bicycle to work on (it's a good opportunity to tune it up), but your bicycle must be similar to the course material (simply ask the instructor).

The course is six weeks, giving each student 12 hours of class time. In the class, students will help repair and recycle bikes for our shop.

Cost is $60 for all 6 classes (paid in full the first class).

*IMPORTANT* Class size is limited (and usually fills up), so you MUST RSVP to be enrolled.

For more information and to register, see Free Ride's website.

Sign the On-street Bike Parking Petition at Dozen Bakeshop in Lawrenceville
The neighborhood needs much more bike parking

On-street Bike Parking in Portland, OR
On-street Bike Parking in Portland, OR

Dozen Bakeshop in Lawrenceville is seeking support to be the first business to install on-street bike parking in Pittsburgh.

An innovative idea that has already happened in Portland and NYC, on-street bike parking usually means either the sidewalk is extended out the length of a typical parking spot or asphalt curbs and bollards frame the parking corral as in the photo above. Bike racks are then installed and allowed to park in what otherwise was a spot dedicated to a vehicle. We are currently seeking support from the community to show the city of Pgh that this community is progressive, forward thinking, and environmentally conscious.

New Bike Pittsburgh Gear and Stuff
BikeFest Shirts, Pittsburgh Cycling Jersey, and new sticker designs

We have some new stuff for everybody to help show your support for Bike Pittsburgh and help spread the message.

BikeFest '08 T-shirts
bike fest bannerCommemorate BikeFest '08 with a snazzy t-shirt!  These are still available for only $10 (+ s&h) and are available in Gold on Black or Brown on Yellow.  Get them before they're gone!

Pittsburgh's First Cycling Jersey
Our friends over at GoCycling have created Pittsburgh's first cycling jersey.  These synthetic jerseys feature a Pittsburgh skyline (best in the country!), and are available in different styles.  Best of all, a portion of the proceeds go directly to our advocacy efforts.

Back by popular demand! STICKERS!
We've reprinted the most popular stickers and produced a bunch of new designs and slogans.  Collect them all.  The full set is available through our website for only $6!

See our GEAR section for more details.
Don't Give Up the Fight: Let's build a "bridge" to Oakland!
Speak up and help provide a safe way to get from Uptown and the Southside to Oakland by bike

bike fest banner
An wheelchair user opts to use the bus lane due to the condition of the sidewalk and cars illegally parked on it.

Bike Pittsburgh is fighting to get the city to build a connection to Oakland that takes us off of Forbes Ave and provides a safer, legal alternative to the Fifth Ave bus lane. But what about the trails you say? The trails close at dusk and aren't consistently maintained through the fall and winter. We need a route that is lighted and maintained throughout the year.

The two things we are specifically advocating for are:
1. For the dilapidated sidewalk to be replaced from Moultrie Street on up the hill and to be signed as a "shared use sidewalk"
2. For the cars that are illegally parked on the sidewalk everyday to be removed and prevented from doing so from this point forward.

PennDOT has just about finished their portion of the sidewalk from the old Lamar Advertising Building on Fifth Ave Down to near the old bathhouse and lots of cyclists are already using it (you can even see the tire marks!). This leaves a fairly significant portion left that the city needs to replace.

We can make this happen, we just need to speak up en masse. Please politely request the City to rehab this sidewalk, keep cars off of it, and to sign it as "shared use."

Send emails to Mayor Ravenstahl and Councilwoman Tonya Payne.
Second Call for BikePool Leaders
Please Help Get New Bike Commuters On the Road to Riding Every Day!
bike fest banner
CommuteInfo.org and Bike Pittsburgh have partnered on a BikePooling initiative to help get new bike commuters on the road. What we need are BikePool leaders in neighborhoods all over the region who are willing to devote anywhere from one to five days a week to helping others get started in riding into work.

If you're interested in volunteering to be a BikePool leader, please contact commuteinfo@spcregion.org. In a brief email tell them what neighborhood you begin and end your commute in, a meeting place, and what time you leave.

Once we have enough leaders in the system, new and potential bike commuters can go to the site and choose the BikePool closest to them.

One of the things we hear at Bike Pittsburgh often is, "I'd love to start biking to work, but I'm nervous and would like someone to show me how to ride on the street and the best route to take."

By volunteering to be a BikePool leader, you could make a big difference in the region by helping introduce more people to bike commuting!
Neville Street Now Paved!
bike fest banner Major Trail Connection No Longer a Mine-field of Potholes and Debris

Thanks to all of you who wrote and called our city officials, and those city officials who listened, we now have a smooth (and safer) surface to take to and from the Junction Hollow Trail.

If you haven't already ridden it yet, you have to check it out (it's that nice). In the meantime, check out a few photos here.

Interested in comparing the new road to the old? Click here.

Please send thank yous to Councilman Peduto and 3-1-1.
Community Human Services Build a Bike Program Needs Your Support
Help a child get a bike and learn how to work on it

Build a Bike ProgramMany of the 70 children who attend the CHS Summer Camp program do not have working bicycles.

CHS have arranged to take ten of these student to Free Ride for a once a week, eight-session course in choosing and fixing up a bicycle.  The educational experience is very much enjoyed by the students and in addition to increasing their knowledge everyone gets to take home a bike!  Due to limited funds, the money to support these sessions must be sought outside of the general, sliding scale tuition which only covers 20% of the basic funding for the summer camp.  That is why they are asking for your help!
