Despite Blustery Weather Bicyclists Celebrate This Important Commuter Connection
On Feb. 11, one of the coldest days of the year, the historic 80-year-old South Millvale Avenue Bridge was reopened for motorist and pedestrian traffic. At a cost of $5.5 million the restoration and rehabilitation project should keep the span fit through 2050.
To improve conditions for area cyclists, the bridge will soon be home to shared lane markings, similar to those
now found along Bloomfield's Liberty Avenue business district. The bridge
will also include bike-friendly "share the road" signage and drainage
grates.
Cheers to the bicyclists who arrived to celebrate another victory for bicycle advocacy in Pittsburgh!

U.K. Hub to Spend Nearly a Billion (U.S.) on Dramatic Bicycle Improvements
Just this past summer Paris made a bold move to become among the elite bicycle-friendly cities of Europe by providing thousands of low-cost rental bikes at hundreds of high-tech bicycle stations scattered throughout the city. Now London is pushing the envelope even further by promising a series of bicycle superhighways cutting a swath through traffic and congestion.
Like Pittsburgh, London commuters have safety concerns when it comes to cycling. By creating these motor-free corridors the goal is to increase bicycle commuting 400 percent by the year 2025.
At a cost of £400m, the 12 routes are intended to be part of significant efforts to transform London into one of the greenest cities in the world.

College Urges Freshmen to Leave Their Cars at Home

Gives Away Bikes, Helmets, and Locks
Ripon, Wis. - Ripon College, located just northwest of Milwaukee annouced an innovative new program to avoid having to pave any more of the beautiful, historic town with parking lots. College president David Joyce, an avid cyclist, shuddered at the thought that student demand for parking was about to outstrip capacity.
The mother of invention strikes again. The "Velorution Program" at Ripon College will give incoming students an attractive offer to keep at no charge a brand-new Trek 820 mountain bike, a Trek Vapor helmet and a MasterLock U-Lock if they agree not to bring a car to campus for the duration of the upcoming academic year.
"Parking in this case is a distant third to the health and fitness of our students, and responsible energy practices. For students, it's a lifestyle choice. For Ripon College, it's choosing sustainability over ease and convenience", said Joyce.
