 City Hosts Complete Streets Seminar

A Street is not complete unless it accomodates all users

Complete StreetsOn January 30th, The Pittsburgh Bureau of Transportation and Engineering hosted a Complete Streets Web Seminar, funded by Pittsburgh Partnership on Neighborhood Development and  conducted by the American Planning Association.

The hour and a half presentation covered basic to advanced principles of Complete Streets, from adopting policies (.pdf download) to specific examples
of Complete Streets. It was an informative presentation that was sure to spark creativity in the nearly 50 engineers, planners, and urban designers in attendance.

 Shady Liberty Footbridge Revealed
A new connection to be built in 2008
Bike/Ped Bridge
At a public meeting on January 30th, artist Sheila Klein unveiled her designs for a pedestrian/bike bridge that will connect Shadyside to East Liberty.

The new bridge will reach over the East Bus Way and rail lines, to link the new Eastside Development with Ellsworth Avenue at Spahr Street.

This will provide a much-needed connection between the two neighborhoods, which currently only connect via Shady, Highland, and Negley Avenues.

Street and Trail Closures, Openings, and Detours
Detour Casino Trail Detour in the Works
Thanks for your patience! We appreciate the positive feedback from all out members and supporters in the development of a detour around the Majestic Star Casino Construction. Your input has helped Friends of the Riverfront, Bike Pittsburgh and the City of Pittsburgh develop a safe and viable detour.

We are in the process of finalizing the route for pedestrians and bicyclists and hope to post directional signage shortly. Click here for a recent article about the process. The temporary detour is estimated to be in place for less than 16 months. Additional details and renderings of the restored North Shore Trail coming shortly.

North Shore Trail - Bay Foods Pipeline
Friends of the Riverfront, Riverlife Task Force and the City of Pittsburgh have been working with Bay Foods in the replacement effort of an existing waterline running beneath the North Shore Trail adjacent to the Heinz Lofts. We anticipate a temporary well signed detour along River Avenue for two months during the winter months. Additional details to follow.

South Side Trail - PA American Water Project
Please note: Pennsylvania American Water has begun the process of replacing their aging pumping station at Beck's Run adjacent to the South Side Trail. Several large trucks a day will use the trail to access their construction site on the banks of the Monongahela River. We do not anticipate this process impeding normal trail usage. Please email FoR with any questions or concerns.

Millvale Avenue Bridge Reopening
The week of February 11th, the Millvale Avenue Bridge in Bloomfield will reopen complete with Shared Lane Markings. More of your BikePGH membership dollars hard at work!
